Bob Dylan
but I'm going to throw in Carole King and Neil Diamond. They have both wrote so much shite for others that it will make your head spin.

Not really possible to catagorize, since it comes down to personal taste, but IMO Neil Finn is up there.

I would agree...
I dont even know where to start here... there are the obvious choices and then not so obvious...
Hell, in the 90s, I'd put Jay Farrar's body of work up against anyone's... greatest alt country song writer IMO, with probably Ryan Adams and Alejandro Escovedo a close 2nd and 3rd

I like Moreland's stuff a lot, but greatest alive?!?! good lord, that's a quite an overreach
If you go by total compilation of songs ever written, it's very clearly Bob Dylan
Now greatest songwriter at this moment is a different conversation....

This guy is more prolific than your whore mother, but he's different in that he never ever leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

None other. From the very beginning with Whiskeytown, his work has been gold. He's unstable, deranged and all over the place. But, you have to remember that most of the great ones are.
