I would tell you, but you've probably never heard of them.

We live in a black hole here in La when it comes to awesome rock n' roll bands. There are many acts which are obscure here but who are popular elsewhere.
My list would include:
Orange Goblin
Porcupine Tree
Fu Manchu
Kyuss
Unida
Hermano
Dozer
Steel Panther
The Sword
Holy Grail
Infected Mushroom
Vista Chino
High On Fire
Acrimony
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Charles Bradley
Can
Nebula
Gillian Welch
Lotus
The Black Angels
The Oh Sees
The Queers
Trouble

Infected Mushroom is definitely not obscure, neither is BRMC
Eta: Porcupine Tree and Can are also well known

Sixto Rodriguez. Not quite so obscure since 2012, when the movie Looking For Sugar Man came out. But between 1972 and 2012 he was as unknown as any enormously gifted songwriter can be. Here's what has become his signature song, Sugar Man:

I think a lot of people are now familiar with his story... question, were you a fan of his before the recent rediscovery of his music in this country?

There is a band called Down for Five from Oklahoma that has a really cool sound. I haven't listened to them in a long time, but from what I remember, they have a really cool 80's metal sound, plus they have a chick lead guitarist who can absolutely shred.

I first heard him—heard of him—in 2011 through a friend of mine in England. Until then I knew as much about the man as anyone else . Better late than never. I haven't seen the movie.

Rapper from New Orleans called Truth Universal...don't know if he is obscure, but he has good tunes. "Angola 3" is alright by me
