I've spent hours working with and today when I got home from work my neighbor had been cutting hay and told me he saw a covey of quail run into the fence rows. I turned PJ loose and started to walk with him he marked the birds within 10 mins. Good to see my work paying off.

Awsome, wild birds are a HUGE advantage for bird dogs in training. Treat those birds well and keep them around, wild quail are few and far between...

I'm surprised they didn't flush. He appears to be looking 6 inches in front of his face.
Gotta get him on that "Easy, easy,... eeeaaassssyyy" command.

I always wanted the tick coloration but my wife really liked him. He has one patch of ticking on his chest he's a pretty dog. I'm proud of him. I'll try to get better picks next time we are out in the field.

Yeah my first time training a bird dog. I'm learning as I go and reading books. He doesn't Whoa very well. It's been fun working with him though

We always had a 30 ft. check cord on puppies and just ran them with an older pair of dogs.
Good pups will point on their first outing, and you can step on the check cord to slow them down.

Wild birds will teach him quick. 90% is instinct, 10% is training...

Awesome. Is he fixed? I might need to make an arrangement for when my female is ready to breed.

That's right. A good dog will tell you very quickly if it wants to hunt.
If you turn it loose and it runs bat shite crazy away from you over the next 3 hill sides... leave it.
J/k...

There's not much more beautiful than a bird dog on point. My dad was a big quail hunter when I was very young. He had english pointers. Sadly, the birds got scarce and he decided to give it up before I was old enough to hunt. He did get me a setter once, but it ended up dying. I think the neighbor poisoned it. And I had a GSP a few years ago, but I didn't have any place to hunt her so I gave her away. If I ever fulfill my dream of moving out west, I'll get a dog to hunt upland birds.

You need to combine your bird with pointing dogs. Now that would be some cool hunting...
