What will prevent this team from winning 11 or more games?

I say its an effective run game that balances the offense which decreases the volume of TO's in the passing game.
Secondly, defensive TO's. I think our D will be more stout but every good D needs to be skilled or lucky and getting some turnover breaks consistently throughout the year.
These two things... we're a great team in the league, not a good one.

Absolutely this. People always point to the defense for the reason we might falter in 2013, and while that could be true, the horribly inconsistent and in no way shape or form balanced offense from last year had plenty to blame as well.
Every true Saints fan knows this team is at it's absolute best when we commit to a successful fun game for Brees to PA off of.

Turnover differential. Support in the running game.

I think that it would be the defense's inability to stop the big play. It's been a killer for us in the past.
Just for the record, I think that there is a decent chance that we win at least 11 games.

Run defense. We gave up 147.6 yards a game. That's insane.

This. And injuries on defense.

The defense.
If they are a competent unit, can get some pressure, some turnovers, and tackle worth a damn, then we win the south and anything goes in the playoffs.
If they suck the donkey balls...well at least we get to watch the falcons choke in the playoffs again.
If they play all season as well as they did against the raiders: Saints-Broncos for the Lombardi.

Line play.
Starts at the line.

If a terrible defense becomes a below average defense, it's an 11 win team .

A brutal schedule.
If somehow the Saints lose the first game, it could cause some anxiety and panic, and who knows they might drop the next game at Tampa which they normally shouldn't. Travelling to both Chicago and New England is tough, granted they aren't late in the season so the October weather shouldn't be unreasonably cold/snowy.
But the worst part of the schedule by far is that ridiculous three week stretch from weeks 11-13. Playing against very tough opponents, on the road, and with very little preparation time.
I could see the Saints finishing anywhere from 13-3 to 8-8.

1. Brees getting hurt
2. Lack of a running game
3. Lack of an average defense

The schedule.
6 games against the NFC South. When was the last time anyone swept the division?
4 games against the NFC West. That division is in contention with the South as the toughest in the NFC.
4 games against the AFC East. We go to the Jets and New England this year. Buffalo and Miami won't be gimmes, either.
Host Dallas and at Chicago. 1-1 against these two is the worst case scenario.
I can see five losses on the schedule, and this may still be one of top two teams in the conference, even if the record doesn't reflect it.

1. horrible defense and no changes - no turnovers, missed tackles, no pressure, and bad game planning (i.e. giving the vets more playing time than producing rookies)
2. imbalance on the offense/bad playcalling - repeat of 2012's offense, throws for a ton of yards, but has absolutely no balance and playcalling was obvious.
3. injuries - obviously, losing good players are gonna hurt
4. vendetta/aggressive effect - as much as I'd like to blow up 50+ pts per week on every opponent, playing extremely aggressive might be a downfall. Might lead to too many turnovers.
5. the schedule - somehow we end up with the 2nd hardest schedule, but we were 3rd in our division. wtf.

i feel like our playcalling and lack of running last year had more to do with the defense putting us in a hole than it did with our players ability to produce. That said we still had the most productive offense in the league, but without a defense that's worth a damn, all it was good for was 7-9.

Defense defense defense
They have to be able to get consitant 3rd down stops and turnovers to allow the offense to be balanced and not have to play catch up or get into these shoot outs every week. The schedule is to tough for that this year.
