This actually brings up another important point: as much as we wanna be deep at receiver, realistically only 3 of them will see significant catches.
So, that leaves 3 realistic choices:
1) Breaston, who has proven in the past to be a productive player. Might be over-qualified for a 5th spot, and a waste for someone who won't get much time. If he stays, he moves up to 3rd in the rotation, just in my opinion. Otherwise he's gone.
2) Tanner, kind of a duplicate Lance Moore/Wes Welker type. Doesn't amaze you with blinding physical ability or size, but might become an invaluable 3rd down WR. He just catches the ball. The question is, do you need another Moore on the team, one who's slower, as the 5th guy? Again, you wouldn't be utilizing his single asset if he's last in the rotation.
3) Hakim- interesting choice. Sure he drops things, but you still have to play back on him. If the idea is to have someone open the field for Colston, Graham and Moore, then Hakim fits the bill.

CSP likes/demands consistency from his receivers which is why I don't have stills as a lock.

True. In college, he did have some easy drops. Not sure how that's going in camp.

But he also played significantly at X, one full year in the slot, and spent some time as flanker (z). I think his versatility makes him a lock.

Has Toon been looking good at camp ?

I have only been 1 day, but he looked really sharp. Catches everything with his hands easily and runs really good routes. He looks bigger than his listed height at 6'2". I don't know their 40 times off hand to really compare, but he reminds be of a slightly fast Colston. Hopefully his good camp translates to game days.

I don't think Stills and Toon are questions anymore, they're locked into the top 4 IMO.

Any talk of Stills going to the PS is nonsense.

He'll just go to new england and become a pro bowler.

I say Breaston is number 5 because he's a veteran. I guess we will see soon enough.

4.) Colston, Moore, Toon, Stills make the roster and we pick up a burner type receiver off of waivers (that can catch, at least decently, and may have a little experience) after some of the preseason cuts take place around the league.

We can just sign Devery when the Redskins cut him.

Just throwing out that Meachem could possibly be cut. The new regime in SD didn't sign him and he was perhaps the biggest FA bust last year. That would be an easy fit for the deep threat guy.Would be cheap too...

CBSSports.com's Clark Judge reported Meachem's $14 million in guarantees might keep him on the roster, but "people close to the club told me they're convinced he won't be a factor."
The team loves Vincent Brown, while Malcom Floyd, Danario Alexander and Eddie Royal were more productive than Meachem in offseason practices. Throw in tight end Antonio Gates and pass-catching back Danny Woodhead, and it's hard to see where Meachem fits in. We wouldn't be surprised if the new regime washes its hands of him.
LINK

Breaston is no given to me. He has to prove himself. He visited with several teams with no signing- likely from the knee issues. Wasn't signed by Pittsburgh with his ex-HC Haley the OC there now. He was a healthy scratch most of the last half of 2012- and KC was desperate for WRs.

Preston Parker, 26, might be the truest slot receiver of the bunch, He has PR/KR experience too. In 2011, 5 catches for 88yds, 1 TD vs. the Saints.

Like Amos said, Alexander is gone, so Meachem is likely a roster lock, at least for this year.

I have to think that if the Saints really wanted to keep Meachem, they would of found a way.

I think Danny Tanner wins the WR battle.

We could have tried to sign him to a new deal before the FA period started. I don't remember hearing the team making an offer. I could be wrong.

agree, just not the 4yr/$26mil way that SD chose. More likely he he stays there fo sho but it would be a cool replacement if he was cut. And say for vet minimum

He still has skills but after 2012 ya gotta wonder how much he was a product of the Payton system. That's the same thing I wonder about Breaston in AZ then flopping terribly in KC.

What the WR battle looks like now.
The WR Battle IMO:

Here's how I would have it:

Locks:
Colston
Moore
Toon
Stills

Bubble:
Breaston - experience
Tanner - catches everything
Hakim - speed merchant
Parker - ditto, even at 6'2" 200

Long Shot:
Fayson

The 2 I would keep of the Bubble guys:
Breaston and Parker, with Hakim on reserve squad.

Could Roby be a viable fill in as our deep guy? He is fast enough (I believe his 40 out of college was 4.34) and knows the system. The injury to Morgan may just give him the opportunity to shine as our deep guy.
