Assuming starting lineup is EG, Holiday, Aminu, Davis, and Smith/Stiemsma. I know several teams have one of their top players come off the bench, but has there been a any recent teams that have had 2 of a team's obviously top 5 players come off the bench. (Part of the recent moves is protection against another EG injury but lets say EG remains healthy)
Maybe its thinking outside of the box and spreading out your scorers so as not to have a lull with the 2nd unit. Maybe defensively and offensively we will compete with other team's 1s but be able to have Tyreke/Ryno take advantage of their 2s.
I'm curious to see how it works out. It seems to have potential.

First recent example that comes to mind for me is the 2010-2011 Denver Nuggets.
Their starting 5 for the bulk of the season was:
PG Billups
SG Affalo
SF Melo
PF Marin
C Nene
But Ty Lawson got the third most minutes on the team with 31 starts and JR Smith had the fourth most minutes with only 3 starts. Not a perfect example but a decent one. They went 50-32 that season.
EDIT: Also the sig image

Ok so I'm doing some research on this now, should have a few more recent examples shortly.

Starters:
PG- Deron Williams
SG- Ronnie Brewer
SF- Wesley Matthews
PF- Carlos Boozer
C- Mehmet Okur
Bench:
Paul Millsap - 3rd Most Minutes, 8 Starts
Andrei Kirilenko - 6th Most Minutes, 35 Starts
-------------------------
08-09 Portland Trailblazers finished 54-28
Starters:
PG- Steve Blake
SG- Brandon Roy
SF- Nicolas Batum
PF- LaMarcus Aldridge
C- Joel Przybilla
Bench:
Travis Outlaw - 3rd Most Minutes, 6 Starts
Rudy Fernandez - 5th Most Minutes, 4 Starts

Not really "starter" minutes but this season Jeff Green averaged 28 minutes and Jason Terry averaged 27 minutes. Which is better than the Nuggets example.

Very Good Example
Boston Celtics finished 41-40
PG- Rondo (Bradley)
SG- Lee
SF- Pierce
PF- Bass
C- Garnett
Bench
Jeff Green - 2nd Most Minutes, 17 Starts
Jason Terry - 4th Most Minutes, 24 Starts

Yea, I guess I was thinking of starter minutes as 30+ minutes per game

What if a couple of the starters only play 15-20 minutes? I don't think the title "starter or reserve" will affect their allocation of minutes.
But I agree Boston is a pretty good example.

Heat this past year. Battler and Allen coming in for Haslem and Chalmers. The Nuggets last year varied from game to game

Can someone explain it to me? Seriously? I don't understand why you bring them off the bench? Is this to try to give you an advantage against the other teams 2nd string? I have never understood this strategy of bringing arguably two of your best four players off the bench. Why not just start them?

Some would say you answered your own question here.
It also allows you to have different starting lineups against teams that have different strong or weak aspects. It add flexibility to adapt to game situations.

But that would mean your "starters" (2nd string talent) is playing against the opposing teams starters (1st string talent). I am of decent intelligence and this doesn't seem logical.

You can't play guys 48 minutes and there is only one ball to go around. If you have Holiday/Gordon/Evans on the floor together at the same time at least one of them is likely going to waste each possession. In crunch time this waste is acceptable because you want to maximize your options to make sure you can score when you have to. Throughout the rest of the game you are taking shots away from a starting level player and giving them to a 2nd string level player. If you spread your "starting talent" out then you have starters taking shots all game and fewer bench players taking shots away from starters.

There is only one basketball. All 5 guys can't shoot at once. Besides "starter" doesn't mean anything. It's who you have on court in the last 6 minutes.

Thank you. That actually makes sense. The whole "not enough ball to go around" argument.
Like Keshawn....just give me the damn ball.

TigerinATL summed it up nicely. Another reason in our case is that of our 5 best players, 2 are SG's and 2 are PFs. I know traditional positions are going to the wayside these days, but like it was said everyone can only play 22-30 minutes a night and it makes more sense to have them in their natural positions that maximize their advantage against the opponent.

Why doesn't D Wade come off the bench for Miami?
Posted on 7/11/13 at 8:50 am to Chad504boy
Because he is Miami's best two guard?

D Wade should play the Manu role, let Ray Allen or Mike Miller start.

I like the premise just curious how all these guys "gel" together. IMO this will probably take 10 or so games at least to get the kinks out.
As far as Aminu as a starter, I am starting to feel that as long as we have 2 of EG/JH/Evans and at least 1 big who can knock down a 15 ftr on the floor with him then he can really focus on what he excels at (Defense, transition, Off/Def RBs).
We have 3 bigs who can knock down open jumpers over 15' in Davis, Smith, and Anderson (obviously Ryno extends all the way to 3 pt line) so IMO 1 of those will be on the floor at all times which will keep the lane open for Tyreke, EG, and Holiday who really can attack the rim.

Aminu needs to become a bit better passer as well as a better handle on the ball. He's a liability with the ball if he's further from 6 inches from the rim.
