Marion would be pissed to be traded to a bad team

"If I'm going to get traded, they're going to tell me what's going on and where I'm going," the 14-year veteran said. "Because if I'm going to a (expletive) situation, I'm not going. It's just that simple."

In other words: he wouldn't come here. We would have to buy him out.

I don't blame him. He doesn't have a lot of time left in his career. I could see him in OKC.

No surprise there. I'm sure the Pels would either flip him again quickly or buy him out, more likely the latter option.

Not happening then. Then only reason you consider paying $10 million for a 1st is because he could play significant minutes. OTOH he has no leverage. If Marion's ruining Free Agency before it starts he's either going to play for the Pelicans or negotiate a cheap buyout/retire. If he retires he comes off the books and you got a pick for free.

Meh, I never considered it a real possibility.

Or how about he actually contributes and EG plays well and maybe this won't be a fricked up situation.

Old story from the deadline.
If Marion doesn't want to get traded to a bad team, he can opt out of his contract.

I'll erase since I can't really discuss my view from my phone.

I do think Monty and Demps have a better shot of persuading him to play than any other team with a top 10 pick, but he sounds like he's in ring chasing mode. I'm not sure helping the Pelicans make the playoffs is enough incentive even with $10 million at stake.

People are motivated by different things, usually it's money and minutes but a guy at the end of his career like Marion often cares more about contending. That's not having a loser mentality, that's recognizing specific situations so you can prioritize and properly manage your resources. Throwing our cap space at Marion would be risky if he's in ring chasing mode, being irrationally confident won't change that.

He wouldn't retire.
It happens every year. He'd whine and cry until he got free money. And then he'd go play for a contender for cheap.

Daryl I think it's more of how our fans would think Marion sees our situation. Not what they think about it

You would think that would be obvious.

It wasn't just this one incident that caused me to make that comment.
I don't even want to trade for Marion, I want to spend the money in free agency. It just irks me when I see fans that have these loser mentalities about the city and franchise.

I'm not sure what, specifically, you're referring to.

You are probably right. I'm tripping over something very minute.

Darryl, have a Snickers.
Because you're grumpy when you're hungry.
Better?

You would.
Fans have a different perspective on a team than players at the ends of their careers have.
A player like Marion wouldn't want to come here. Period. He wants to go to a glamour market or a team that "has a chance", meaning a deep playoff run.
I think most of us think we are on the right track, and could make a playoffs within the next season or two, but that's just not how players like Marion think. It sucks, but that is the reality of the modern NBA.
We have to keep rebuilding, make smart draft choices and efficient FA decisions. Eventually, we can be a team that veterans at the end of their careers want to come to. But we aren't there yet.

I've really fricking had it with nba players dictating too much where they will and won't play. Bunch of fricking pussies in this league.
