Attended a dinner at Merion Monday night, flew back to San Diego after it was over. Spent yesterday and today in San Diego so he could attend his daughter's 8th grade graduation this afternoon.
He takes off from San Diego at 8:15 pm PT tonight, lands in Philly at 4:30 am ET. Tees off 2 hours, 40 minutes later at 7:11.

Doing an overnight cross country haul is probably a little different on a Gulfstream vs Delta coach, though.

Phil's one of the few who's actually played Merion in a tournament setting (a US amateur back in the 80s, I believe)... some other guys who playing the Walker Cup a couple years ago as well.
As a whole, the field doesn't have much experience with this course... and the rain earlier this week didn't help familiarity either.

Vegas Pro better rethink his Phil bets

Our long national nightmare is over: Christine Brennan has confirmed that Phil's private jet does indeed have a bed.

He won't make the cut. Phil that is.

I'm really surprised by Phil doing this. I admire him for his family commitment, but he's only got 2-3 more legit chances to win this tournament.

I don't think I gave any indication in my post that I was joking.

He's stated several times that this championship is the one he wants most. Maybe he's changed his tune because of his family now, but since he hasn't said otherwise, I assume he still feels that way.

I'm pretty sure I acknowledged that in my post. I even said I admired him for doing so.

This story would be cooler if it wasnt an 8th grade graduation. That is an event that doesn't actually exist for most people and is honestly just fricking dumb.

Pretty clear you don't have children. Phil has always put family first. This is the same child that he got special permission from the USGA to carry the pager in 2000 in case Amy went into labor. He had a driver and plane ready and he was going to leave the course mid-hole if necessary.

Phil played a couple of rounds at Merion prior to this week. If he shoots E tomorrow he will get credit for being a wonderful father (which he is) and a championship contender. If he shoots 75, he's a knucklehead and the critics will have a field day. I hope he shoots 70.

It really isn't that strange. I'd be willing to bet if he were in a hotel in Philly, he'd go to bed around 10 or 11 and wake up at 4:30 for his round.
Sounds like he's basically doing that...just on a Gulfstream.

Yeah pretty clear you just compared 8th grade graduation to having a child.
Family first is a great attitude and all that shite but I don't think it's that great of a story bc as I said, it's a non event. I literally will value a single sporting event (one baseball or soccer game) of my kid's over them passing 8th grade.

Yeah, a narrative is going to get pushed either way but it really isn't a big deal. People are making the (partial) mistake of equating it with the toll that doing this would do to "normal" people.
The day to day life of being Phil Mickelson is probably pretty chill so I'm sure he was able to squeeze in a two or three hour nap today if he wanted, then when he walks directly onto his private jet, he'll go into the aft bedroom and sleep in a (relatively) nice bed for the five hour flight over then walk directly to a waiting private car after taking a nice hot shower in the executive lounge and go play his game. And since he starts first, he finishes first and it's back to the nice hotel!
Is it better than sleeping in his own bed at home? No. But it's not as grueling and crazy as it is being implied.

the part where you implied that he would put golf in front of family was pretty funny, IMHO.
