if you can't live off 38k you've got a problem unless you're in like Manhattan or something.

Summarized it for you.

The question is, how do you parse out the teachers who are most effective (note: not necessarily the hardest working) and reward them accordingly?

I don't know how you do that either. What has changed in America is that many, many parents are unfit to be parents and are unwilling to put in the time to actually help and encourage their children to work hard in school, and respect the teachers and administrators.
It' hard to determine the effectiveness of a teacher, when they don't have total control over the children's learning environment. The parental role is what is most important in their children's development and education, and may are unwilling to invest in their children.
When I was a child I was told to respect my elders, and that if the teacher contacted my parents about my behavior/attitude in school I could expect correction when I got home.
The stories my wife tells me about the attitude of children and their parents really does make me sad.

I totally agree with this. This is why I believe that it's impossible to say what teachers should be earning. They are only partially responsible for the output they are given credit for, and it's impossible to determine how big that portion is.

It was mostly the parents and administration that drove my wife out of teaching. There were bad kids but they never seemed to faze her. The parents that believed that their kids deserved grades that they didn't earn by sleeping in class and not turning in assignments and the administration not backing her up was her main complaint.

She homeschools now, and although she makes $0, she's much happier than she was teaching in public school.

And much more appreciated

The wife in I are on a set income of about 40k in retirement. No bills other then insurance for us and car/truck and house which eats more then 40% of our income. And yet, we are still insurance poor.

No, I just figured out how to be frugal and live very well because of college. Only debt I have left is student loans.

I haven't read any of this thread because it's too long and too boring. But lemme give ya some inside info. There are a LOT of teachers who make over 100K a year. They are smart. They live in ISDs (rich areas). They don't wanta deal with your a-hole kids who are stupid. In fact, they don't wanta deal with your kids who are average.

They teach the elite in the elite districts and they get paid very well. I'm talking public, not private.

I wish teachers started off making twice that. Then we'd see more "top of the class" students going into teaching, which would increase our quality of education and our society as a whole.

When taking Ito account actual time worked + benefits available (if you have never looked into these, holy crap) + job security once tenured, teachers are paid more than adequately.

And to the OP, yes I could easily live off of that. Though, I am single.
