Ok MB, I've been told my a few friends that his music would be right up my alley. I've admittedly not listened to much of his stuff, so I ask all you to link me to some Bruce Springsteen "must haves".

If you're looking to be a fan of one album and that will satisfy what you are seeking, then Nebraska. It's the one record that people that dont like Springsteen, like...
If you really want to get into the Boss... go to the 70's... cant go wrong..
My personal favorite is The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, followed by The River and Born to Run...
Dont be afraid, break down that wall between you and Bruce and reap the rewards...

I prefer Darkness on the Edge of Town. It's a very dark and stripped down record compared to Born to Run which I'm sure didn't sit we'll with his label at the time.

My favorite Bruce song - Going Down

Born to Run is THE Springsteen album. If you like Bruce, you'll like that album. It's almost a statement of purpose. If, like me, you think Bruce is wildly overrated, you'll buy Nebraska, the least Springsteen album in his catalog, and call it a day.

I guess it depends on what your expectations of that is.. I mean he isnt this jingoistic nimrod, like a lot of these modern day country artists... however, he does sing a lot about the underbelly of America and whats wrong with it... but also about the american spirit to overcome... salvation is also a very important theme of his music...

I would say as others that Born to Run and Darkness are great. Greetings From Asbury Park is a favorite of mine as well. I always enjoyed The River too.
One of my favorite songs is Meeting Across the River which doesn't get much if any radio play.
The Sirius Springsteen channel is broadcasting from the Asbury Park boardwalk tomorrow. I may have to go check it out

And he doesn't pound you over the head with it between songs. He says donate "some food" and "get out and vote" and then he puts one frick of a kick arse rock n roll show.

This. I used to think he was overrated. Then I listened to the albums and the live bootlegs and watched the concert footage and seen him live three times. He's frickin amazing.

Unplugged alt version of born in the USA is pretty cool.

Never thought he was anything more than an average singer. Comes across as very full of himself. I don't know where that whole "Boss" thing got started but he's not even close to being that good.
Benefited from having a great backup band.
JMHO.

before the fame, bruce would take the band's pay and distribute it, so his bandmates started calling him boss as a way of poking fun at him. he hated the nickname at first.
people should really take the time to look up something before they pass judgment.

Yeah, right.

Look, the hype is overdone, no doubt. But the guy is one of our best songwriters (with surprising variety and range if you really think about it), and his live shows, while occasionally hokey, are genuine events.
