If you use or teach the "proper" overhand slide operation of pushing arms together, make damn sure you keep your muzzle down range. for most people this means turning perpendicular to the target.
a-hole at the last range I brought wife to kept muzzle flashing her when he racked or or cleared a round. I mentioned it to him and he kept doing g it so he was kicked out.

She shoots best with a carbine, 5.56, std cap mags.
2nd best Glock 19.
If SHTF at my house when I'm not there, I've told her to grab the carbine. She's dead on with it at less than 50 yards and can put multiple rounds on target in quick succession. And she knows how to changes mags and cock it quickly.
With the Glock she's a pretty good shot at 15 yards--definitely minute of man, so to speak. With 15 rounds in the magazine, I wouldn't want to be in front of her with her pointing it at me in anger.

I'll throw this in here. Late at night. Wife home alone with kids in middle of house, 2 kids sleeping on one side of house, other side of the house is where he shotgun/weapon of choice is. Man starts to break window of front door trying to get in.
Do you run for gun, kids, or phone first?
I'm thinking gun first but frick thats tough not going straight to your kids but it may be of no use if you get your kids and can't protect yourself.

I am surprised by the number of responses indicating CC pistols and revolvers. This is home defense, not CC we are talking about. Size is only limited by manuverability. All you guys giving your lady short barreled airweight or ultralight .380's or 38 spl are putting your ladies at a disadvantage.
Those small guns are light to allow for easier carrry not to reduce recoil or make them easier to shoot.

My wife knows exactly where the 12 gauge is in the closet and shoots it well.
I have a .40 in the bed stand to my left. I sleep on the left and her on the right. Told her that if the shite got real I would push her off the bed and go for the 12.
I have gone over scenarios with her of someone breaking in.

If she can definitely get to the phone in time, then:
1. Phone (just dial 911, say "Home Invasion" and go for the gun...don't waste time interacting with operator)
2. Gun
3. Kids
Otherwise
1. Gun
2. Phone
3. Kids
I would think a BG is going to go after an adult before any kid.
But this situation is why I keep weapons at each "extremity" of the house, so that there will be a weapon available no matter which direction they run, and regardless of a BG's point of entry. Makes the above scenario moot.

Try giving your lady a practice drill. Most people, men and women, fail under stress miserably.
Just calmly walk in from work one day, stop, and yell "THERE'S A MAN BREAKING IN OUR HOUSE RIGHT NOW! GO!!"
It took mine over 3 minutes to unlock the safe and grab the .357 revolver.
Now, it's Kimber pepper spray within arms reach...

So my wife will have a loaded gun when i tell her i was just "running a drill".... no thanks.

quote:Naw...you have to plan the drill. Discuss days in advance the word "drill", that when you say it, the weapons will be unloaded, but to act just like the real thing.

Before doing a drill, empty weapons (I use snap-caps).
Here's how I do it:
"DRILL-DRILL-DRILL...INTRUDER DOWNSTAIRS...BACK DOOR...DRILL-DRILL-DRILL. RUN RUN RUN, FAST FAST FAST"
It gets the heart pumping and exposes weaknesses really fast.

If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back to what he was doing. It’s human nature.

I was one of the only ones who mentioned it earlier:

I don't have a ladyfriend as of now, but I think it's a common misconception that they HAVE to have a small revolver for home defense.
A heavier gun is only a bad thing if you wish to carry it. Besides that, a heavier, full-sized handgun is always better.
