I am about to buy my first rifle and was looking for something that was under $500. I have already been looking and the Mosin Nagan, Savage Axis, Savage 111, and the Remington 770. any suggestions?

Also I would prefer to have it chamber something like 30-06, 7.62x54r, or any other inexpensive round.

Don't get a 770, its a turd.

The ruger american rifle at $299 can't be beat for the money.

Mossberg 100 atr is a solid gun too for around $300.

You can't go wrong with any rifle out there these days, IMO. The scope makes the gun. Save any money you can on a beginner rifle and spend it on a high quality scope.

Report back on what you decide upon.

This is one of the few times a little background info wasn't asked for. What is your intentions for said first bolt action rifle?

Ponger,
You've got a number of fine choices. Handle them and see which ones have the particular traits you want including: 2 position vs 3 position safety, tang vs wing vs Remington type safety, type of recoil pad, hinged floor plate vs mag, fit and feel.

For the price range you're looking at, I'd compare the Savage (model 10, 110, 11, 111 etc.) series, Winchester Model 70 series, Ruger All American, Howa and Weatherby Vanguard. I'd stay away from the Remington 770 and Savage Axis. The Remington Model 700 is still a fine gun if you're not bothered by their recent apparent sell out.

I hear good things.

Is a Winchester 70 too much for a "starter" rifle?

You are required to post pics after a purchase. It's just standard protocol

30.06 is not an inexpensive round.
