I cut Reed Johnson and keep Gattis and Schafer.

Johnson has a guaranteed contract this year with a potentially team friendly option for next year and has proven to be one of the better RH bench bats in baseball, meanwhile Schafer is AAAA player who has negative career value.

Not permanently. Perhaps for a couple weeks. See if pinch hitting and being a late inning replacement helps him see things a little differently.

Can the Braves afford to be wrong on BJ? Especially with all the players in need of contracts in upcoming seasons. If Baj continues to hit below or at Mendoza line does his defense/SB make up for low avg/obp?

No. They can't. He will get every opportunity imaginable to prove the FO right.

Yes and no.

Yes, IMO the Braves can still be really good without much from Bossman Jr.

But no, his defense/sb does not make up for his low avg/obp. There are plenty of guys a lot cheaper than him that can play cf and swipe some bags.

At what point does he become a hindrance? We are a month into season, till All-Star break? The whole season?

A long time.

See Dan Uggla.

Well at least Uggla gets on base and provides power, BJ can't even get on base. Plus havent defensive metrics rated Uggla more favorably past two seasons?

Last year plus this years offensive stats for Reed Johnson: 64 games, 136 AB, 36 H, .264 BA, 8 R, 7 RBI, 0 SB

2011 plus this years offensive stars for Jordan Schafer: 72 games, 232 AB, 57 H, .247 BA, 38 R, 10 RBI, 20 SB.

Similar games on defense IMO.

I don't see the great advantage in Reed Johnson over Jordan Schafer. If Schafer is a AAAA player, Reed is a AAA+ player we're overpaying in spades.

come on

I said I don't expect him to do that

I'll be fine with optioning Gattis and bringing him up when rosters expand, but I don't know about keeping Schafer over Gattis

project those hit and RBI numbers if they had the same amount of ABs

using those numbers, each at 500 AB

Reed Johnson: 132 H, 29 R, 26 RBI

Schafer: 122 H, 82 R, 22 RBI

plus add in the fact that Johnson hasn't had a season with a BA lower than Schafer's career BA

Schafer is a K machine with no on base skills and negative career value as a player, 48 PA does not change that.

You left off Schafer's 43 SB's in your projection to Johnson's 0.

Personally, since we're not depending on either of them for power, I'll take Schafer's +53 runs scored and +43 bases stolen in 500 AB's over Reeds +10 hits and +4 RBI.

I can see which player is adding value to the team THIS YEAR and that player sure as hell ain't Reed Johnson.

Schafer and Gattis are going nowhere. Neither will Reed Johnson. Laird might be odd man out. Also, Tehran is going nowhere. Beachy will rehab for a while and someone will be injured by then. Maybe Beachy can come out of the bullpen for a while.

I know we probably don't go after Justin without the signing of BJ. But imagine this team with Bourn in CF instead of BJ.

It's a waste to keep Gattis as the only backup catcher. He will get zero at bats because FG refuses to play the backup catcher without another on the bench.

If you are going to move one the the catchers, Gattis has to go down and keep getting AB's. However it's pretty silly to take his bat out of the lineup, especially when he can get spot starts at 1B and LF.

Reed Johnson and Schafer are doing the same job and only one of them can play CF. I think Reed's days are numbered unless there is a phantom BJ Upton injury.

Jordan Schafer can't hit LHP off the bench.

Why would we want to do that?

We'll have Venters back and have plenty of options out of the pen.
