for the old-timers - the end of the Jim Smith era

So I just checked to see when the baseball teams' last losing season was, and it was in 1978, Jim Smith's last year as HC. 12-34
That said, he two years prior to that were losing records also. He also had a losing record over his career.
So for those that were around at the time - was he just a crappy coach, or was he handcuffed in some way by serious apathy toward baseball (if indeed that's how it was back then)?
Stories/recollections would be awesome. TIA

I doubt anyone on here actually went to baseball games back then.

Smith lived around the corner from me. My little brother and his son Joey were friends.
Nice guy but he was not a good coach.

When I came of age Maravich was playing and Chollie Mac was becoming an institution. Baseball?

he did have one... 1981 we were 23-30
so the OP is under an erroneous assumption

I was a student at LSU during that time and I somewhat knew the catcher of that team. I went to a few of their games and what I remember was they had poor pitching, made alot of errors.... but they made up for it with even worse hitting.

that was back in my era, I was a walk on, it wouldn't have mattered if we'd have been 50-0, no one gave a shite about baseball back then, except for families, and of course, groupies

I was on campus, mid 60's. Poor coach but no one really cared. It was like well, you had to put a team on the field. I think he did win an SEC title later when Miley was there.

Jim Smith took LSU to our first-ever NCAA tournament and won the SEC title in 1975 .. Other than that, he wasn't too good ..

he made his MLB debut in '75 the same year LSU made their only pre-Skip regional so he wasn't a Tiger that year

Miley wasn't on the SEC championship team ..

Funny but true story..I remember going to a game sometime in the late 60's or early 70's and all I had was a twenty dollar bill. The guy selling tickets didn't have change so he just told me to go on in. As I recall, I sat right behind home plate and there not 100 people in the stands.
Ahh... The good old days !

My freshman year at LSU was 1978. Pretty sure I graduated having never seen a Tigahs baseball game.
Daddy Dale was just getting the hoops team to national prominence, & I'm pretty sure I made every game at the Deaf Dome 1978-1981. Even got to see a regional final at the Dome.

Jumbo Smith was the football equipment manager. Being baseball coach was a part-time job if he had time to do it.
Baseball was definitely not a priority back in the time to Jimbo Smith was head coach.

I'm guessing about as many people went to baseball games as went to tennis matches.

Nope. Mike went in the MLB draft after the 1974 baseball season. I know his last year playing qb for the football team was the 73 season. Then the following year the baseball team won the SEC.

I was there 1968-1971. My roommate played and started as pitcher the first home game his sophomore year. Smith was nothing more that an equipment coach who did double duty. He was an idiot. Also, I did go to many games. Me about 25 other folks. It was a sad time!
