I use Mustad gar-proofs on my lines, so this is never an issue.

I use needle nose pliers. I then see how far I can toss them on land.

Cut a good stick and prop his mouth open. Watch him wallow til he dies.

Over 5 lbs, you need to smash/kill/maim them before you try and take them off your line...too much risk with scales and teeth if they are at full strength.

Under 5 lbs, I use my Lindy's glove to pick them up (and prevent slices in my hand from their insanely sharp scales) and then remove hook with a pair of pliers.

We talking smaller gar? If so, just grab em, and yank the hook out.

A dehooker. Same thing I use on all fish off a trotline. Make my own. If you need a picture, I can get one. Same tool I been using for over 45 years, even offshore.

If this is what he's talking about, you'll never believe how quickly you can take catfish off of a troutline with this IF you know how to use it.

Most I've seen are all metal. I saw too many go bloop bloop so I make mine with a wooden handle so they'll float.

Imagine paint brush is a fish. You can pop your wrist with it and get the hook out. Trick is NOT to let the doohickey (that's what we called it) move. If you let it turn you'll bend your hook to shyt.
