So she signed up for STD when she went back to work in anticipation of child #2 at some point in the distant future.
Yeah but you cannot be pregnant when you sign up for STD. I think you have to have had it for at least a year before it will cover pregnancy. Better check with her employer's STD provider to make sure.

Sure, join in with the leeches. You will find a justification if you try hard enough.

This is correct, Aflac recently denied my wife her STD benefits because she delivered less than a year after she signed up. Missed it by 6 days.

AFLAC has some policies that will pay short-term disability for maternity leave, provided that you've held the policy for a certain period of time prior to filing a claim.
As for the unemployment insurance, that seems like an abuse of the system. It's there for people who get laid off through no fault of their own, not for people who decided to have a kid.

You probably should have thought about this before having your baby. No, it is not right in my opinion to do this. Do it on your own and don't take any "hand me outs". Sorry if I sound rude but I just do not think it's the correct thing to do.

While I agree with you if you are talking about unemployment or LTD, but as far as short term, if it is a covered benefit they would be stupid to not take it, they paid for it either directly or as a benefit and should use it accordingly

Is this an acceptable practice to put my wife on unemployment once she has the baby?
No.

people have been telling me that my wife would qualify since she has to quit her job before the baby is born
I'm sure she could go to a quack shrink & get disability, but come on.
