I have quoted the OP:

Overall this is my favorite type of music. I love the way most ''stoner'' metal acts try and capture the nostalgia of classic rock with their funky artworks and fullfilling song time.
I tried to think of the best three songs to describe the "stoner" genre. These aren't the bible, but rather some defining songs IMO. Hope you take the time to listen:
SLEEP- Dragonaut
Kyuss- Demon Cleaner
Electric Wizard- funeralopolis
Feel free to drop tracks from all the mentioned genres or similar.
NO HOLDS BAR

Another simply outstanding recommendation. I cannot get over how so many of the bands you mention are love at first listen. Every single song is righteous on this one. --Sayre

Would QOTSA be considered stoner metal? Not really a fan of metal and not familiar with the sub genres...
Anyway, saw them at Stubb's in Austin in 2002 and they were pretty damn good...
If they arent considered stoner metal, disregard above...

Anything by Fu Manchu
Fu Manchu - Mongoose
This is a good one that was on the soundtrack ofHighway. The Desert Sessions was a collaboration from a lot of different Stoner Rock acts.
The Desert Sessions - Johnny the Boy
Some of these may be borderline stoner rock.
Corrosion of Conformity - Albatross
Alabama Thunderpussy - Heathen
Sonic Flower - Goin Down
Kyuss - Gardenia
I consider this the first Stoner Rock tune:
Black Sabbath - Wheels of Confusion
Fu Manchu - Mongoose

Impossible to do this genre justice without mentioning any of Wino's bands
Saint Vitus
The Obsessed
Spirit Caravan
Wino
Most stoner bands are influenced by Black Sabbath, but most of their music was just a heavy version of blues. The real originators of the stoner rock sound was Pentagram
Some more modern bands
Weedeater
Buzzoven
Bison BC
Bongzilla
This is one of my favorite genres overall and one I could go on all day about.

Agents of Oblivion

QOTSA may be a really good band, but they arent stoner metal or any metal for that matter. DOWN is a stoner metal band. They sound nothing alike.

For Sludge metal, there is Crowbar, then everything else.

New Red Fang music video
quote:
The video for "Blood Like Cream," off Red Fang's third LP, Whales and Leeches, begins with Portlandia's Fred Armisen running into the band's local bar and frantically explaining that zombies are on the attack. The band themselves seem unconcerned until they learn that the zombies aren’t the kind that want to eat brains. It's worse: they're the kind that want to drink all the beer.

So this thread is 8 pages long and no one has mentioned the band Thou? They're from Baton Rouge and certainly one of the more prominent bands in the sludge metal scene. They have been called stoner metal before but I would say they are more doom/sludge. They're one of my favorite bands regardless of the fact that they are local and I try to see them whenever they play.

Dopelord - Black Arts, Riff Worship & Weed Cult
DOPELORD-Acid Trippin'
So far so good... some of you will enjoy the hell out of this
DOPELORD-Acid Trippin'
quote:
As far as band comparisations go, Dopelord is like a "best of" with a heavily influenced sound they proudly make their own. It's as heavy, trippy, spaced out and stoned as we always love and loved it in the stoner/ doom departement. Dopelord's second full-length continues where Magick Rites left off with added charm and flavor. A more fuzzy and rawer approach than its predecessor. It's seems like the band added a more sleazy and vintage feel to their overall sound and production quality. The riffs are dirtier and the vocals are more exposed.

I'm terrible at keeping up with genre's, so where would you put Mastadon, Ministry and COC?

Surprised no one has mentioned Earthless, great music mostly jam little vocals if any, long songs
LINK
Also huge fan of Mastodon and The Sword though both those bands cross into different Genres depending on the Album but hell I have liked everything both have done

AFAIK, Black Sabbath's Master of Reality album is considered the first Stoner/Sludge Metal/Rock album.
For example, Dragonaut by Sleep sounds a LOT like the songs on Master of Reality.
