Stihl ms311 or ms261?

I'm looking at getting a new chainsaw. My poor little ms170 just can't keep up with what I need to do anymore.
The 261 is about $50 more than the 311, but I've never ran a pro-grade stihl so I'm not sure if it's worth the extra coin while having a little less power than the 311. Both are rated for 20" bars which would cover most of what I would ever do, but I would like to be able to run a semi-skip 24 on occasion.
Anbody here have experience with the pro-grade stihls?

I'd bet you'll be fine with either. There are no bad Stihl chainsaws.

My uncle has a 311 all I know is that sob is a work horse.
That's really all the experience I have with those 2. I have a cheap piece of shite poulan.

i had one several years ago (if i remember correctly its the similar to the one your asking about). it was tough and freaking heavy as all get-out but didn't seem to bind up as much. also didn't have any problems with it - most importantly

My little ms170 has been run to hell and back non-stop for about 5 years now. I don't think they're made to be run like I run mine
I'm just not sure if the "pro grade" is worth the extra coin. I've never ran one.

That 311 is a heavy fricker though, but it'll cut anything you need it to.

I sell them for a living...go 311. The 311 is a tank and a damn good saw. The 261 IS considered "pro-grade" and can tote a 20" bar but you wouldn't be happy with it IMO. Even with a skip tooth chain you wouldn't be able to run a 24" bar on a 261. You can get away with it on a 311 but I wouldn't make a habit of it.
If you're going to run a 24" bar more than occasionally, do yourself a favor and go with a 362. It is a good jump in price but is hands down the best saw they have put out in the last 5 years, especially since they have discontinued the 440.
Strictly between a 261 and 311, I would go with a 311 and never hesitate.

Dual wheel single cab with a standard, you don't see those very often.

If you want/need a bigger saw, a 66 (or 660 as they're called now) is tough to beat. One of the few models that hasn't been a victim of the EPA yet.

I don't plan on pulling a 24 more than once or twice a year at the most. I'll be running a 20" 99.9% of the time with whatever I buy
I looked at a 362 and that is a fine sonuvabitch but I didn't even look at the price tag on it.
I also looked at a 392 but holy shite that is a heavy SOB. The dude at the store was trying to push the 392 on me more than anything because I mentioned a 24" bar
ETA:391, not 392

The pro should get a little better efficiency if I remember right. Plus they cut like absolute animals. I have 2 pros and one normal and the pros cut like animals compared to it.

If I start cutting enough wood to need a 660 I'll quit my day job

I have a Stihl chainsaw that's 20 years old and still runs like a top. Think it's a 270, one that they no longer make but local dealer says it's one of the best ever made.
