GASP!! You mean out of all of the calls an announcer makes every game you get your panties in a wad because all of them aren't perfect all of the time.
OH THE HORROR

There's no sense is having a discussion with you. Apparently legitimate criticisms aren't recognized by you, and the only reason to possibly dislike Jim calling baseball games is because one is nitpicky over name pronunciation or pitches.

That being said, the other night I heard a classic during the Friday night game, I think it was Franques but don't quote me on this, he said that he went to school and graduated with Shaq so between the two of them, they have 4 NBA championships and $500 million dollars. I thought that was funny and, until now, didn't know how to add it to a thread.
I heard that too...it was actually Hanagriff who said it. He was working the game with Patrick Wright. They mentioned that Jindal went to Brown, and Wright said something about going to high school with Jindal. Then Hanagriff was like "oh yeah?" and then made his comment about Shaq. In baseball, there is so much dead time that it is nice to listen to people who can go off on interesting tangents and say enough humorous things to keep it entertaining. That is why I will miss Bill Brown and Jim Deshaies doing the Astros games. The Astros are so bad that sometimes the announcers were the only reason to watch the game.

Who's the old guy on CST with Ben Mcdonald?
I don't realy care for him.

Lynn Rollins. He's put there to make Jim on the radio seem palatable.

If anyone ever heard Chris Macaluso & Joey Pappania doing 91.1 KLSU FM radio broadcasts of baseball games, it was golden. Absolutely golden.
But Hawthorne's voice is just iconic. His voice is the sound of LSU, like it or not. A ton of haters that demand perfection in this thread are just not understanding what this thing means.
My Dad had John Ferguson and Hawthorne to listen to. I just hope we go find someone with real talent and don't give it to Hanny. I enjoy him on the radio but calling the game he just brings zero emotion to the table. His voice doesn't convey tension, excitement or intensity. All of which Hawthorne effortlessly relays to his listeners who can't get in front of the TV or be there with the team.

quote:Again, absolutely no one is expecting or demanding a play by play guy to make no mistakes. I doubt anyone expects that Jim will stop doing baseball either, unfortunately. Yes, his voice is synonymous with LSU sports but he is objectively bad at calling baseball games. I don't see what part of saying that means that anyone expects perfection at all times.

The difference in call quality when he's not there or takes innings off is night and day, and everyone knows it.

Good God, man, let it go.
LSU is not going to hire a different play by play guy for baseball because some whiners are not happy with JH.
The man has been here 30 years, handles one of the biggest broadcasting departments in the college game, and has won more awards for his job performance than all you cry babies combined.
Let it go! Nothing is going to change unless JH decides to leave.

I don't mind JH
yes he does screw up
its way back there and its out of here, no wait it bounces of the wall and he stops at second with a double.

Anybody know if the games are broadcast in the LC area? 870 sounds like garbage and we're just out if range of 98.1. I've searched to no avail.

I couldn't remember who said it. lol
It was funny though

Apparently there is no pleasing the know-it-all LSU fans who expect perfection. Every and I do mean EVERY play by play man makes mistakes. Around here it seems to be a grand sport to pile on anybody that isn't perfect particularly by a group of fans whose use of the English language is, to put it mildly, interesting.
Yes Jim makes mistakes. Ok so what's the big deal? Why does that fact generate thread after thread of smarmy comments from people that haven't pronouced the "th" sound in generations?
Give it a freaking rest and quit being such a bunch of over critical jerks.
Cuz you don soun dat damn gud my fren.

The big deal is that people listen to the games expecting to hear what is going on in the games not to hear that there is a ball hit to the outfield and then 30 seconds of complaints about how dark it is before being told what the result of the ball being put in play is.
Why do you people act like it's just people complaing to complain instead of realizing that the complaints are legitimate?

This happens every play?

I'll legitimately agree that Jim makes mistakes. Will you legitimately agree that you are expecting perfection? When a bunch of you get your collective panties in a wad over a call or two over the course of an entire game, what does that say about you? Where is the legitimacy of obsessing over a mistake or two and spending post after post beotching and moaning about it?
Come on man lighten up. He ain't perfect and you sure as hell aren't either. Just enjoy the passion with the imperfections.

Why would I do that? I would be lying if I agreed to that. I don't expect perfection. But there is a lot of room between what we get from Hawthorne and perfection, regardless of how nostalgic people feel when they hear his voice.

He's trying to argue that everyone complaining about Hawthorne speaks with a thick cajun accent. How that is supposed to be insulting, I have no idea. But that's what he's arguing.
