Heard an interesting idea on the radio to make the NCAA BBall Tournament better

Was listening to XM91's College Basketball Today show and the host was asked what he would do to improve the current layout of the NCAA Tournament.
This was his solution:
Make the NCAA tournament a 32 team playoff instead of 68. BUT, make it a double elimination format. This would ensure that only the best teams in the NCAA get in the tournament, and also protects them if they have one off-game.
In addition, the NIT would expand to 68 teams. This keeps the amount of teams that get to play in a tournament the same, but makes the NIT even better with fantastic competition.
To me, this is a win-win solution for the tourneys. What do y'all think? See any flaws with this plan? Would you like to see this implemented?

good lord what a terrible idea. how many games would that be? would eliminate brackets which is the appeal of the tourney to begin with.

Would you like it if it was a regular bracket with just 32 teams? Or do you just hate the idea all-around?

So there will only be one at large team?

i would never have changed it from 64. But 32 single elimination is better than 32 double. Have you ever seen a double elimination bracket for just 8 teams. I cant even imagine 32. Not to mention like i said the main selling point of the ncaa tourney is filling out brackets. thats why its so popular. to take that away would be terrible.

You seem to be under the impression that the NCAA is concerned with improving the quality of play and finding the best team in the country. That's an incorrect assumption.

It is actually the same number, but would be a logistical nightmare with sites and scheduling...

Here's an example:
Not too bad, IMO. You could still fill out a bracket. You just would never be right.
ETA: Golfer beat me to it.

Lose in the 1st round, and you'd have to win 9 straight games in a 2 week period.

yikes. would it be 9 or 10? would you have to win twice to win it all against the undefeated team?

Actually 10 because you'd have to beat the winner of the winner's bracket twice.

No fun.
Ruins Cinderellas and teams that are 4 seeds, etc that get hot at the right time.
Getting hot at the right time is what makes the tournament awesome.
It would also eliminate 12 seeds from even being in the tournament.
In fact, I fricking hate this idea.

The scheduling and travel and host site problems eliminate the idea right away before even talking about anything on the basketball side

Why do people insist on trying to add brush strokes to the Mona Lisa? The tournament is awesome. In fact, its the only thing keeping people interested in college hoops at all. Leave it alone.

What if 2 point shots were scored as 3 points, and 3 point shots were awarded 2 points?

while i hate the idea in the OP, it's the balance between being a good tournament and an exciting tournament
MM is absolutely shitty at determining a champ, especially in a sport like basketball
this goes from the selection through the first weekend, until the final 4. it's all just bad
it should be an 8-team playoff with 3-game series or a 4-team playoff with 5-game series
obviously this will never happen, but if we want to make the tournament a legit one, this is how you do it
