My grandfather gave me the best advice. His grandfather told him "every man will have the chance in his life to have one good woman, one good friend, and one good dog."
I'm still looking for that damn good dog.

Just get a different color lab from your buddy.
They are hard to beat for an all-around good dog

Lots of good hunting dogs but there a reason the huge majority of them are labs

Me too damn good advice you were given

Everybody has a lab for a reason.
It lives its life to make you happy with the exception of shoe destruction.

Boykin
Mine is 1 and already will pick up ducks all day long. And 38 pounds makes him the perfect inside dog.

Labs and Chessies are the most popular for a reason. If you want something smaller, Boykins are becoming more popular. If you're hunting both upland and waterfowl, Drahthaars and Griffs are bred to do both. Some Shorthairs will do it all, but most of them are more suited for upland game. All in all, you really just need to do your homework and find a reputable breeder within your desired budget
