I'm a sucker for spaghetti westerns, so

Once Upon a Time in the West

My favorite is the new True Grit, though.

Love your pick, great movie. The Searchers is probably the greatest.

This is almost impossible to say.

Can I break it down to my top ten for each decade? That seems reasonable.

If mini series count, I'd say Lonesome Dove by a long shot.

If not, I'd say The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, followed by Ed Dorado and Man WIthout a Star.

And while it's not as universially acclaimed, I always liked The Sons of Katie Elder

By a mile. But it's not a shoot'em up, action movie. MWSLV transcends the western genre and ranks high on any list of great movies.

This question is not even fair. A case can be made for every one listed so far.

Impossible to name the "best western of all time" as evidenced by the movies listed so far.

Leone's Western films (Duck, You Sucker is pretty overlooked) and The Wild Bunch are my favorites.

Unforgiven and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are great, too. Really too many to pick just one.

This question pops up every few weeks and the answer is always Lonesome Dove.
