Just watched it with my dad(my step mom had never seen it), and we started to discuss this.

Everything from great, coherent story and plot, to great characters and great acting.

Hard to think of any. Maybe Get Shorty or My Cousin Vinny. Trying to think of some in the 2000's and drawing some blanks.

What say you? Any come to mind?

With the possible exception of The Holy Grail, I'm not sure there has ever been a comedy as great as A Fish Called Wanda.

This one can be thrown into the discussion.

Still can't think of any in the 2000's. Course, they have been dominated by Apatow and his crew. Those movies don't compare.

ETA: The British version of Death at a Funeral could be.

Wayne's World
Kingpin
Mallrats
Dumb & Dumber

Those are probably my favorite comedies over the last 20 years. I could make a case for them.

I love A Fish Called Wanda, but there are many movies that could make a case for being better or as good as it.

A Fish Called Wanda is pretty much the hardest I've ever laughed in a theater.

Fierce Creatures I saw for the first time on video - and it was equally funny... but not the same laughing at home as in a theater.

The propeller-clipping scene is possibly the hardest I've laughed in a theater, ever.

I seriously thought the last hour of the movie was a straight up slap-stick comedy.

Interesting question. There are movies I like about as much and that have humor but they are not straight comedies with the kind of cast that Wanda had. It seems like now if you are making a comedy it's intended for a younger demographic with dumber jokes. A few that I've liked since Wanda are In the Loop, The Guard, Rushmore, Zombieland, The Cabin in the Woods. None are really that close to Fish Called Wanda. Maybe Groundhog Day would come closest.

I love this movie, it would be hard to beat but I have to say my favorite is the Full Monty.
