Plot continuing moments in movies

What are some of your favorite moments in movies where had something simple have been different, the entire movie plot would have ended immediately?
Mine -- first five minutes of Star Wars (Episode IV), when they choose not to blast the escape pod out of the sky. Why so conservative with the laser blasting? What would it have harmed to just shoot it down? They do that, the whole series doesn't happen.

Considering droids are about as common as cell phones in that universe, not shooting the escape pod seems extremely incompetent.

and the fact they were after data, not people makes it even more curious

The Family Guy spoof is worth a watch.
It was a plot hole made larger by pointing to it. Just say it's the trash and leave it at that. Adding a discussion about it highlights the absurdity.

This. The command not to destroy it suggests that they a) had been blasting them out of the sky already, b) it is standard practice to do so while engaged with rebel forces, and c) they have scanning abilities that can detect life forms, but not droids.
I understand that they needed to refer back to it later to determine where the droids landed, but it just seems really unnecessary, and worthy of a Darth Vader force choke.

Every time the bad guy goes through an elaborate way to kill James Bond and lets him escape.

If Neo swallowed the blue pill, no Matrix sequels.

the very beginning of Skyfall where 007 is killed but somehow isn't actually. And has no scars to show for being shot by a sniper rifle.

This is a good one.

In the first Austin powers, the part where they make fun of that is comedic gold

Any scary movie where the main characters sense something eerie and should leave the area immediately but they decide to not only stick around but decide to get closer to the danger. Unnecessary Death and destruction is soon to follow.

Oh! If Fabiana hadn't forgotten Bruce Willis' watch

If Lloyd wouldn't have noticed Mrs Swanson leave her suitcase, no Dumb and Dumber. And that's just sad to think about

Batman Begins:
If little boy Bruce Wayne never falls down the well when playing with little Rachel Dawes, he never develops a fear of bats. Therefore he never gets scared at the opera and his parents are never shot and robbed. As a result, NO Batman!

If the MIG never got radar lock on Cougar, Maverick never goes on to Miramar and Iceman is unanimously heralded as the best fricking pilot of all time.

I know, right?!
The last 5 or so years of our life would be very different I'm sure. This board would probably implode on itself if it didn't have a daily TDKR vs Avengers thread.

Any mystery/detective movie and/or tv show where the main character all of a sudden has a revelation and figures everything out in 10 seconds

Also when they catch whoever they're looking for and tell them what they did and they immediately give up and admit it
