I'm 19 and I want to start playing competitve golf I've only been playing for about two years and only in the past month I've started playing seriously. I shoot in the high 80's low 90's but I'm pretty sure in the next couple of months I'm gonna be down to the low 80's high 70's. I plan to work hard at it. I drive the ball consistently 270 but every know and then Ill get one 300. But what I was wondering is how do I start who do I talk to ? And how good do I have to be ?

Sounds like a loft problem

Different country clubs will have invitationals starting around March and you could pay to play in those. You'll get flighted either by your handicap or first round score.

Rule #1: It doesn't matter how far you hit it.
The only way you are going to break 80 is to improve your short game.
1. Go to amazon
2. Buy Harvey Penick's Little Red Book
3. Read said book
4. ???
5. Profit

Yeah thats all I hear and thats what Ive been working on. Where do I go to enter tournaments I was looking to enter some in the beginning of the year just so I can get a feel for tournament play.

Tournaments prob won't start up until march or April. Each state has a golf association. I would start by looking it up on the internets

The masters is usually in april. Not sure if registration is still open yet but you may want to call them to get your name on the list

I'm sure Louisiana has a golf association website that lists the years upcoming events. Go there and sign up. Also.... May take a little longer than you think to consistently shoot in the upper 70's low 80's

Let me know how this goes. You plan on dropping 8-10 strokes in just a couple months?

Good luck with that. 10-11 strokes in a few months?

If you don't mind me asking, how strictly do you follow the rules and are you being honest about the state of your game. I worked with a guy a few years ago who described his game in a very similar way. After we finally played together, the truth about his ability appeared. I'm not trying to be an a-hole, but just make sure you are being honest with yourself before playing competitively.
Good luck

yeah I mean I used to play with my buddies and we would do gimmies and such but the past couple rounds Ive been really adherent to all the rules such as ob and water hazards and stuff like that.

Stop golfing and write a book,
"How to drop 10 strokes from your golf game in 2 months"
"How to drop 10 strokes from your golf game in 2 months"

Depends what you mean. How good do you have to be to win the 6th flight with 90? or what it takes to win the whole thing?
Individual brec events (2 days) usually no lower than -4.
Golf week am tour is another idea.

keep playing and practicing, and don't fool yourself. play by the rules and establish a handicap

The only golfing partner I had who broke 80 had a totally different strategy. He didn't count bad shots. He moved the ball from behind trees. He moved the ball from hard dirt to fluffy grass. I only played with him because he gave me 6 new balls every time we played.
My wife told me "Well, that would make you a whore, now wouldn't it?"
I stopped playing with him. My current partners play strict rules and none of us shoot below 90.

Huge plateau you are talking about, going from 90-80 is exponentially harder than going from 100+ to 90

I've got $100 that says your "high 80's round" is more like 94-97 if you are playing by the rules.
