Pick out my Handgun

So I usually get a $1k in cash for Christmas between my family and the inlaws.
I'm thinking I may get a new handgun for home/personal defense, maybe concealed carry at some point.
What would the OB purchase? I currently have a 357 magnum in the ole nightstand.
P.S. I don't have to spend the total 1k on this purchase.

Need more criteria. What kind of pistol/revolver are you wanting?
Posted on 11/28/12 at 9:44 am to 4X4DEMON
Open to any suggestion for a good pistol to keep in the house in case shite gets real. I want some stopping power.

You already have a .357 magnum which is almost universally accepted to be the best man stopping handgun caliber on earth. Why not get a compact .357 magnum and start conceal carrying?

If you want to CC with it, Springfield XDS. When KR shows up I'm sure he'll have a good CC 1911 recommendation.

Springfield makes the best handgun on the market in the $500-700 range IMO. I have the XD .40 and love it. Thinking of selling it at a gun show and bumping up to the XDM. I don't have the compact but my dad does and he loves it. He bought the Walther PPQ 9mm and the Springfield and said he likes the way the Springfield feels and shoots much better.
Just do a little research and listen to folks around here. Go to academy and hold a number of them and see which one feels the best.

Those are two different pistols in my opinion.
A concealed carry pistol is not the best choice for home defense.
You would serve yourself better to get a good/great CC Pistol. The Glock 26 or similar Baby Glock, Springfield Armory XDs (.45ACP single stack) or that Kahr. Then buy you a shotgun with the difference for keeping it real inside the house.

So is Bapple.
The smaller 1911s are notoriously undependable. You can't say that about a Glock. I don't know if the SA XDm is better than a Glock, but I do know that the SA has made Glock redesign their pistols in an attempt to improve the pistol. The Guide Rod spring and the replaceable backstraps are SA inspired for certain.
People seem to forget that Glock revolutionized the Semi Auto pistol. Everyone has been chasing Glock since 1987, and Springfield makes a good product (technically a Glock with a grip safety).

I wouldn't figure a fella with a pair of guns like you tote around would need any other protection.

Glock 19 for CC and 20 guage youth model remington 870 for home. 2 birds 2 stones 1K.

Get the HK45 Compact or the P30 in .40. Very pricey, but you won't find a more ergonomic or better shooting handgun (unless you look into 1911s). Everything else feels like your gripping a brick after owning those

I have the Xdm 9mm and its a great firearm for an even better price. I haven't done a ton of research, but I believe it would be hard to find an auto with a match-grade barrel for a comparable price. As far as stopping power, I looked at getting the .40, which is obviously better in that department, but if you can't stop a human with 19+1 then you shouldn't be defending yourself with a firearm.
My buddy has the XD sub-compact and theres really nothing overly "compact" about it. Its a little large for an easy concealed carry IMO.

Guilty as charged.
I'm just not drinking the Glock koolaid on the Glock bandwagon. Yes, they are great firearms, but there are firearms out there that are just as dependable and are much more comfortable, and simply BETTER. This isn't 1987 anymore. Glock needs to realize this and actually do more to their design. Hell, people still buy the shite out of them though.
I think the perfect case in point is the S&W M&P. It has taken the Glock formula (polymer frame, loose tolerances) and added these things called ergonomics.

I may be a 1911 man but I have to politely disagree here. The original 1911 was made as a full sized "Government" model. The "Officer" sized 1911s (3.25" and above) are a bit picky sometimes. Not to say you can't find a reliable one, but they aren't the most reliable in the 1911 platform.
And as for the OP...

This is something you need to do on your own. You can look at specs and pictures all day but until you hold one at the store, you won't know what you think feels best.
You asked for "stopping power" but you already have that as Downshift politely pointed out. 357 is a potent round.
Is this gonna be a car gun? A home defense handgun? A possible CC handgun? We need more info and you need to run to the gun store and hold some. We can only tell you so much.
