and why can't the guy tip on his gift card ?
He probably can. I've never had a problem doing that.
Never tried at RC but at French Market bistro, I had a $100 GC, wife and I ate for $80 I put the GC in the folder and was walking out and the waiter caught me to give me the GC back with $20 on it, I told him it was for the tip and he said they could not do that, I talked to the MGR and he said the only thing they could do is let the waiter keep the remaining balance on the GC and use it himself, or wait till someone paid for their dinner with cash and swap it out then. I told them that was ridiculous and was just a ploy to get the customer back in the restaurant to use the balance of the card

I would be interested to hear what someone in the business has to say about this. Is the sale recorded when the gift card is purchased, or when it is redeemed? Do you pay the taxes when you purchase the card?
As far as tipping goes, I have recently started tipping with cash. I zero out the tipline on the invoice, and leave some in the folder. Am I helping the server? Am I screwing the bartender? What say the food service folks of the board?

That's what it sounds like. I just got a $200 gift card to Uchi, curious to see if I can tip on it.
