Well you are in the minority. Most college football fans tune in to some bowl games during bowl season.

I'll never understand why a fan would really be offended by a bowl game. It's football on TV. People crave and wish for it through spring and summer, then bitch about it being on TV in December.

Enjoy the football. Get in a pool with friends and coworkers and do a pick'em. We're just fans, why get offended because espn is playing the humanitarian bowl instead of reruns of World Series poker on a Tuesday night?

I'm not offended by bowl games, I just don't care about them and don't watch. I also don't watch NIT hoops games. Garbage. I also wouldn't watch NFL teams play postseason exhibition games that didn't matter. I also don't watch All Star games or Pro Bowl games. I'm not offended they play them, it's just garbage and I won't watch. Players aren't trying and they don't count. I also don't watch regular season NFL games between teams that are eliminated from playoff contention. Any questions?

Playoffs= end of the conf championships. Unless, they make mega-conferences. They'll start with 6 and increase it from there. Eventually, the regular season will become almost irrelevant.

No questions, however,

This is fricking stupid. You are telling me that Oregon vs Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl last year didn't matter? BCS programs are what seperates a school from another one when it comes down to a recruit picking a school. BCS bowls pay out millions and millions of dollars to the athletic department which allow schools to expand their stadiums and increase revenues or improve their facilities to attract top notch recruits. This enables them to build their program in order to compete for championships in the future.

As far as players not trying in bowl games this is just about one of the dumbest things I have ever seen on the Rant. This is the players' last opportunities to showcase their talents to the NFL scounts in a game situation against some of the better competition. Tell me that Justin Blackmon wasn't trying in last year's Fiesta Bowl against Stanford. Tell me that the Russell Wilson wasn't trying hard last year in the Rose Bowl against Oregon. I guess you can't, since you weren't watching.

If you don't care about a bowl game thats whatever. I couldn't give a rats arse if you watch any football all year long, but to say that the bowls are garbage and that the players don't try is one of the stupidest things I have ever read on here.

I recall numbers showing that LSU basically broke even in the couple of Chick Fil-A bowls in which they played and maybe made a nominal amount for playing in the Cotton Bowl.
you recall incorrectly. the SEC shares bowl revenues, so we get a piece of the pie from the 2 BCS bowl games the SEC plays in every year, even when we play in the Peach bowl. Last year, the number was over 14 million. a trip to Atlanta for the team doesn't cost nearly that much

Even if they did break even in terms of money for that particular year, thats irrelevant. A bowl bid allows a team to practice for the 3 - 4 weeks leading up to the bowl game which helps prep for next season.

Also, how many schools that never go to bowl games get top otch recruits? Where is Kansas' recruiting this year? How about Colorado's?

Bowl games matter.

So what?? This might shock you but this is ABOUT THEM, not you. They train all year, pull on helmets and go crash into other people. The bowls were invented long before television and they are meant to be fun for the players and the fans.

No, I can't name the winner of the Holiday Bowl 10 years ago or the winner of the Continental Tire Bowl last year but I remember our bowl games. I remember the fan base being excited for the Independence Bowl after a decade of misery, I thoroughly enjoyed beating Miami 44-3 in the Peach Bowl, I loved beating Notre Dame in the Sugar and I even remember the La-Lafayette kicker running around and crying after winning the New Orleans Bowl last year. I assure you the ~30,000 Rajun Cajun fans that partied in the Quarter after that game were happy to be there. So what if the Super Dome was not full or the tv ratings were low. If you are not entertained then switch your tv over to a rerun of the 'Big Bang Theory'...

Talk to any coach and ask them. Those 3 weeks of bowl practice are HUGE given the limits imposed by the NCAA during the spring and fall.

Exactly, even if a team like lsu plays in a shitty bowl, Les always say they like having the extra practices.

What the frick are you talking about? There is almost zero support for this idea. Bowl games are great. Much better than whatever other bullshite is on for most of December. Let the kids get rewarded for their hard work.

Like everything else...the almighty dollar rules. If it doesn't turn a profit...then it will stop happening. Money is like oxygen.

Anybody who thinks bowl games "don't matter" doesn't understand how college football works. As others have mentioned, the extra practice time is extremely valuable, and recruits are tuned in and watching. Also, unlike the NFL, each year doesn't truly start with a clean slate. Your ranking to start one season is, to a large extent, a product of how you did the previous year--including your bowl game. You may not think that's the way it should be, but it's the way it is. Plus, conference bragging rights are on the line during the bowl season. There are lots of reasons to care about your team getting to a bowl and doing well in it.

Re-think your math. LSU did not receive 14 million dollars from the league for bowl games.

When the amount LSU got paid for going to the Peach Bowl was compared to LSU's expenses for going to the Peach Bowl, it was a break-even proposition. The point is, teams for the most part lose money by going to bowl games. This is a fact. Do I think bowls should go away? Of course not. Do schools benefit from the extra practice and exposure? Of course they do. But from a strictly monetary standpoint, they lose money for the school.

quote:

Really, the best that most any school can hope for is a break-even deal or something close to it once travel expenses are factored in. Bloomberg News reported that for the 2010-11 postseason, "the average team loss in a BCS bowl was $346,959, reflecting an average expense allowance of about $2.38 million and an average expense of $2.73 million. The average loss in a non-BCS bowl that postseason was $139,604."

tigernut777, Hears a Quick Suggestion for you, Don't watch any Bowl Games.

Bowl Game will always be in College Football. There always going to be Good reason to Go to and play in a bowl game.

And for a College Team who had a Good season it's a nice way to conclude the season. All the Coaches enjoy the extra Practice, Plus most college fans Like to go and support there team in bowl games.

Plus your Team and conference pride shines in bowl games. Your a waaayy off in your "honorable mention" thanks for playing" trophy foolish talk.

A FAIR WAY to crown a NCAA Champion will be here in 2014. If you look back at the vast majority of past seasons, no more than 2 or 3 teams really deserved a shot at the National Championship.

Your rant for the day get's a F. Its not happening dude. Bowls are here to stay!!!!
