I read a thread on here a couple years ago about raising chickens in suburban areas. We had chickens when I was a kid and I really wanted my kids to get to experience it as well.

I finally got around to building a coup and getting a few. We picked up 4 chickens and plan on getting a couple more. I just need to add wheels and handles, and the wife and I should be able to move them around the backyard.

I'm not a carpenter, but this thing came out alright.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea what they are. Got them from a guy at work. They are young, but already laying. They lay brown eggs. I got a Rhode Island Red and a Red Star today.

I wouldn't put more than 4 in that space. Crowding leads to pecking problems and stress. OR I'd open that mother up and let them free range during the day- at least in the afteroon while you drink a beer and watch 'em.

I'm betting those are Golden Wyandottes.
Brown eggs makes me feel more certain.

Orpington's lay brown eggs too. Few breeds lay white ones.

Nice. Just moved to NOLA and 2 of my neighbors have chickens. I'm fixing an area for some quail right now.

I have chickens in my backyard. They are so much fun. I let them free range all day, even while we aren't home. They do fine. They all have their own personalities and they love to come sit on my lap. Great pets. We have 3 now but we are going to get 3 more this spring. We raise them from day old chicks, which is a lot of fun too.

nope, but we do have vegetable beds. I just put up some plastic netting around the beds and it kept the chickens out.
