What kind of egg production do you get out of 6 chickens?
I have 5 chickens and I probably average 4 eggs a day. And that was during the winter. I'm hoping production picks up when the days get longer.

How many total you think you can keep in that coup? Do you still have to feed some corn or feed?
I think I'm maxed out at 5 hens. We let them out as much as possible and they just roam the backyard. At dark they just mosey back into the hen house.
I fee them one 20 ounce scoop of laying pellets a day.

How do they smell after a couple months?

When buying chics, can you buy all hens as chicks? Or just buy some and hope you got more hens.

We move them around every other week and I have not noticed a smell at all

You can buy all hens. Mcmurray hatchery is a pretty good online place to buy from. All kinds of breeds to choose from, but they have a 25 min order on chicks.

If you buy Red Star chicks, which are the best laying hens from what I've read, they can be sexed at hatching. The hens are a different color than the roosters.
I bought all my hens already laying. Found them 10 months old on Craigslist for $10 each.

Leghorn hens are pretty much accepted as the best egg producers- about 300 eggs per year.
The Red Star is a very good one too. They actaully has some Leghorn in them.

White leghorns are def among the best. Large white eggs. Ancona's also lay a white egg..med size. You can usually tell what color eggshell based on their earlobe coloration. Rhode island reds are good layers too..brown shelled.

quote:If living in a subdivision, I'd avoid anything with any Leghorn in them. Noisy. High-strung, panicky, cluck louder and longer and at more things than any other breed. Will also fly over a 6-ft fence and roost in your trees or roof of house.

Plymouth Rocks (anything ending in "-Rock") are calmer, less "clucky" and lay maybe 5% fewer eggs. Live longer and lay more years than Leghorns. They tame up well and tolerate little kids picking them up.

Clip their wings. Anconas are loud as hell cackling after they lay.

They lay white. They're a med size breed. Black with teal tint in sunlight with white speckled throughout. Came from italy around 1880'sish

Actually, I'm not sure if it's a Barred or Plymnouth Rock. I was looking at the color pattern today and trying to remember what I'd once read on the net.

Oh duh. Okay. Yeah I just had a beautiful rooster I was gonna cross with my buffs. I'd bought it for 9 bucks at a local, weekly farm auction that sells chickens, turkies, ducks, quail, peacocks, you name it.
Roosters usually fetch 2-4 bucks.

Blew my mind how much livestock has gone up. Some layers go for 10-15 bucks. I remember when folks would have trouble giving them away..same with goats..now some sell up to 150
