Wow.

Not picking on you at all, but you really have no idea what you're in for.

It'll be loud, it'll be crazy, the energy will be insane, and you haven't even gotten inside the stadium yet!

Find a parking place EARLY! I can't stress that enough. They will go super fast for that game.

Go up to tailgates and just talk. Introduce yourself and tell people it's your first time here. You'll be offered all the food and drink you can stand.

Wear your LSU gear and just talk to people. I'll be there!

Make sure you see the team and the band come down the hill.

Players should walk down the hill around 4:50, the band about 20 min later or so. It'll be right there in front of the stadium, on the north end, in between the stadium and the PMAC. You'll see everyone lined up.

That is a must do. Make sure you see Mike in his 'house" as I like to call it. He sometimes doesn't feel like getting in the trailer and going out on the field but who knows.

Have fun! You're going to be blown away!

I'll be there for the game against Pure Unadulterated Evil as well and I welcome you, a Californian, going to my beloved LSU for a game. Nothing on the West Coast compares to college football in the South and LSU is most special. Every person I've taken to an LSU game from outside of the South is amazed with the entire weekend and all the tradition that makes LSU football so very great and unique.

Driving from N.O. I'd get off on La. 30 ( there's a huge outdoor mall there) and drive straight down to the stadium. Go as far as you can & then, if you're going back to N.O. after the game, U turn & park on the side of the road facing back towards I-10. Leave N.O. early,as traffic for that game will start early. Lierally, a 9:00 am arrival is not early. Park & walk towards the stadium & you'll run across tailgating everywhere. Go to Chimes if you want, but it is a restaurant, a good one, but it is right off campus & will be packed & you'll end up waiting & standing in line. I'd walk around instead, letting people know your story, and you'll get all the food & drink you want, a better variety & free. All day long. If it's warm & your wife needs a respite, the union is nice, has clean bathrooms & is airconditioned. Easy to find. Go to Mike's cage early, as he's put (hopefully) into his trailer late afternoon. The band area will be packed, so find out the time it comes down the hill, find an elevated area to watch up ( the ramps for the basketball arena fill up early) & as soon as the band passes, head to the stadium. The pre game noise will be incrediable. Suggest your wife bring her own roll of TP as all the bathrooms are swamped, tho there are some nice ones; they just tend to run out. No umbrellas or large purses allowed in the stadium, so if rain is in the forecast, you can get cheap ponchoes at any gift store round campus. Post game, after we win, be in no hurry to leave, as it will be one big party afterwards & traffic will be a gridlock. Perhaps make plans to meet back up with a tailgate crew you got along with particularly well. They will all invite you. Be prepared to be exhausted Sunday.................

Be sure to be in your seats way before Pregame - it promises to be INSANE. TGBFTL playing Hold That Tiger/Pregame Salute is the most underrated pregame pageantry in any sport.

Bring some cough drops. Your vocal chords will thank you.

The noise emanating from Death Valley on the night of 11/3 will make Halloween 1959/Cannon and the '79 USC game sound like a Sign Language Workshop in the Helen Keller Room of the basement of Nicholson Library - during spring break...

at least 2 hours too late. The law school lot was full by 930 for USCe

by noon, tailgates should be starting to get into pre-game mode...

for that game, it will be cookin' earlier than that.

edit:

1. If you can find a room in BR for Saturday night do it. Otherwise hang around and take your time, but expect to be late getting to NO.

2. Come for the football game. By that I mean, have a good dinner in NO, but get up really early and come to BR. NOLA is great, but you can hit it any time. Gameday for this game is a one time thing.

3. I like the idea about your SDSU gear. Maybe wear an LSU hat, and you will be royalty.

You will be stuck in traffic for an hour minimum. I live just outside of New Orleans, and for the USC game I didn't get home until around 2am.

first draft of our itinerary for 11/3:

7:00 leave new orleans (exit la 30)
8:30 arrive in baton rouge. park in lot d (corner of skip bertman and nicholson) or on nicholson drive (la 30) headed south
9:00 - 4:00 walk towards mikes cage while meeting the fine people of louisiana
4:00 go to the hill and wait for players and band to come down and enter stadium
6:10 enter stadium
7:00 - 10:30 lay the wood to alabama
11:00 - 12:00 sit in traffic on la 30 towards i-10
2:00 arrive in new orleans

Good job on the itinerary.

If you park where you show, Mike's cage is on that side of campus. Sooo, make sure you get over to the parade grounds, Indian Mounds, Greek Theatre areas as well.

Also, I do suggest eating at Chimes. If you get there before 1115 or so the wait will be short.

Used to live in RB and PQ. The advice everyone is giving you is rock solid.

This is an abysmal decision. The streets of Baton Rouge near LSU's campus look like the 5 during rush hour.

That's a damn good plan. That area to park would be much easier to get out after the game. But if you leave right after, you should plan to sit there for at least an hour. Like someone else said, plan to head back to a tailgate after the game and let traffic die down. You'll still be waiting, but at least you can have fun instead of sitting in the car.

That said, if you can, get a hotel in Baton Rouge, but do it soon as they all may be booked already. If you do, plan to park somewhere different as Nicholson (Hwy 30) and Highland are meant to get people out to the South.

And also, like someone said, go for the game. Chimes is good, but you would have a much better time walking around campus. Chimes can always be done at a smaller game. Plus, you can get free food and drink vs. paying, and you'll likely wait a while.

One thing, where you plan to park is the SW side of campus and the Indian mounds/Hill, Mike's cage, and stadium are all on the west side. The campus is huge and if you stay in that area you'll miss so much. You'll likely run into many, many people on that side, but try to head east and north and check out those parts of campus (Chimes is at the center North gates).

As for Friday night in New Orleans - there are so many restaurants that you can't go wrong. Ask the Concierge at the hotel and he/she can help you out on what you're looking for. Don't do any of the touristy ones. If you want, you can grab something Sat AM, and Camilla Grill is good, but out of the way from downtown heading toward BR. And depending on when you fly out, you can try to catch brunch in the quarter Sunday AM.
