LINK

obviously, you'll have to press the 'Next' link at the bottom to go forward.

I really can't see Emily Blunt as Black Widow, or Sean Connery as Gandalf or Morpheus.

I thought Mark was made to play that role. I just don't see Leo as Dirk.

I wouldn't call the lead in Avatar or Black Widow "legendary roles." Some will agree and add others, some (including the author) will disagree.

I'll add this..

John Wayne turned down the role of Marshal Matt Dillon for fear of being type cast as a cowboy.

It’s possible that Indiana Jones could’ve been Ford’s only iconic movie role too, if Burt Reynolds hadn’t turned down the opportunity to play Han Solo in ‘Star Wars.’ Al Pacino, Nick Nolte and Christopher Walken were all considered for the role, but it finally went to self-taught carpenter and galactic anti-hero, Ford. Can you imagine Christopher Walken asking Chewie to make the jump to light speed?

Charles Bronson - A Fist Full of Dollars

(Thank you. Signed, Clint Eastwood)

ETA: Not sure if this is considered "legendary" in the board's opinion. But it sure did launch his career.

I feel like Will Smith could have pulled off Neo, but it would have been a departure from the roles people were familiar with him doing at the time. Depp in Ferris Bueller would have been interesting. Connery would have been pretty awesome, not so much as Morpheus.

The only ones that make sense are Costner as Dufresne, and Depp as Ferris. The rest suck and I'm glad they didn't turn out

So a minor role in Iron Man 2 = Legendary Role?

This is going a ways back but Gary Cooper was producer David O. Selznick's first choice for the role of Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind. When Cooper turned down the role, he was passionately against it. He is quoted as saying, "Gone with the Wind is going to be the biggest flop in Hollywood history. I’m glad it’ll be Clark Gable who’s falling flat on his nose, not me".

Also, Alfred Hitchcock wanted him to star in Foreign Correspondent (1940) and Saboteur (1942). Cooper later admitted he had made a "mistake" in turning down the director.

John Travolta - Officer and A Gentleman...

He was busy getting his pilots license

Kind of ironic.

Not a turn down situation ... but the Lonesome Dove characters were originally envisioned to be

John Wayne as Woodrow Call

Jimmy Stewart as Gus McCrae

Henry Fonda as Jake Spoon
