Like line up in shotgun and have your QB just rip a quick punt on 4th down. Might be a dumb question but couldn't find an easy answer without digging in the rule books

Yeah. You've never seen a QB punt out of the shotgun?? Happens every once in awhile.

The punt formation is only the way it is for strategic reasons

Sure can

Wanna say that Spurrier used to do this on 3rd down while at Florida when he would get frustrated with his QBs.

ETA: From one of the comments on the video.
quote:

By the way, Cunningham was a two-time All-American punter(with a career average of 45.6 yards per kick - still a UNLV record) and is also the UNLV all-time passing leader with over 8,000 yars and 59 TD's in 3 seasons. Oh, and how 'bout Sammy Baugh? He? was an All-Pro QB, punter, and defensive back at the same time for multiple seasons. He's still the #2 punter of all time behind only Ray Guy, and he is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of football.

at my high school our coach had us go into shotgun every fourth down as our punt formation aptly named "Gun Punt" because our QB was also the punter. basically teams had to remain in defensive formations and just send a safety deep but after a while everyone pretty much realized we never went for it

i think we went for it like 8 times but we did get them every time

Not only can you, I remember the Scellphone Brothers punting on 3rd down a few times out of a shotgun formation.
