Heading to San Francisco next week and looking for some cool beer bars that I need to check out. Also looking for recommendations on beers that I can't get in Louisiana and must try before I leave. All suggestions welcome.

Staying at the Palace Hotel (Market and 2nd) in the Union Square / SOMA neighborhood. Won't have a car but not scared of walking.

TIA and Geaux Tigers

I lived there for a year and went out a lot. What kind of places do you like?

I'm not necessarily looking to "go out", just some place with a good selection of local beers and where I can comfortably go solo. Chimes in BR would be a good benchmark.

Any beer recommendations would be great too. Reading really good things about anything from Russian River Brewing Co.

I stayed near union square this summer. There was a random beer bar in the back of a diner at the corner of o'farrel and powell. 40 or so draft beers, mostly local. Just go up the stairs to the right of the walgreens and walk all the way to the back.

Can you get Russian River beers anywhere in San Fran? Is it similar to Abita in Louisiana in that respect or do I need to go to a beer bar?

Honestly toranado is a little over rated. Go to monks kettle on 16th st between valencia and guerro. Much more expansive beer list better service. They do food as well. They also keep a list of cellared beers which is really cool. Check out amensia as well. You will feel like you just walked into 1968. The music is awesome as well. Got to the pirate bar as well. It's on Franklin and mcalister. There is a really cool beer garden in Haha valley for day drinking. It's on octavia by patricas green. Ask a local they can direct you. There is a few if you want more I can give you plenty. Also food advice as well.

bschlessel, thanks for the recommendations. I'll definitely give one of those a try. Are any of those walking distance from Union Square? If I'm cabbing, are any of those walking distance to each other so I can get a few birds with one stone? If not and you had to pick one, what would it be? Thanks again.

cant remember the name of it, but if you go to the ferry building, there is a bad arse happy hour spot across from it thats is half inside half out on the 4th floor of a building.

If you go to the ferry building around 4-5 pm and look across the street you cant miss it. Have really good app / bar food and carafes of specialty drinks and pitchers of brew.
