Why do Jordan, Ellis, Smith seem to consistently underperform?

Given what we have invested in these three guys it seems like we don't get much bang for our buck with them.
I'm mostly ignorant about line play - does anybody know what the problem is? It seems like all have the size and strength, but do they just lack the motor or the ability to be above average NFL linemen?
Even with Gregg Williams' insane blitz schemes they still never really got rolling as far as sacks, fumbled forced, etc. So how do we really expect them to get pressure and contain an RGIII or a Cameron Newton with only a 4 man rush?

Sedrick Ellis is a bust and a fricking joke

Jordan wasn't that bad... Ellis has never and will never be a sack producer..... so anyone thinking he's going to just post double digit sack totals is smoking rope.... Smith, unless it's a contract year, doesn't produce like he should.... he has gotten better vs. the run, but we pay him like a premier DE, and if you pay him like a premier DE, he better perform like a premier DE, which he isn't....
i'm hoping to see Martez in the next game coming off the edge alot more because he's the only guy we currently have that can consistently apply pressure and change what the QB wants to do.... everyone else is taking up space out there....

Jordan looked good in the run game, he's never going to rack up the sack numbers.

I don't really watch the line enough to see much more than whether or not they're "winning" or "getting push".
Once the initial surge is done I put all of my attention on the QB or RB, etc. I only peripherally watch the lineplay to begin with.
It seems like both Redskins lines absolutely disgraced both of our lines today. Which really sucks.
I was under the impression that our O-Line would be as good as last season, and that our D-Line would be able to harass RGIII under a patchwork Redskins O-line.

Ellis has never really shown anything. I keep forgetting he was a 1st rounder out of USC.

Jordan looked much better today. The one bright spot of today's "performance" was our D line against the run

I've given up on Smith. I've made every excuse under the sun for him the last few years (doubled teamed, always being held, not enough help on the D-line), but every elite pass rusher in the game faces those same issues and still produce. I'm glad his suspension was over turned, but the dude doesn't hasn't been getting it done and hasn't for a while now.

Tank the year, trade Ingram for a top 5 pick, draft Montgomery and Mingo.
Am I doing it right?

jordan and smith do not have the physical ability to be speed pass rushers

Jordan was good today.
I want to see Hicks out there, we might actually get push/penetration up the middle. He's so quick and explosive off the snap.
We need more of Galette and Wilson than Smith. Smith just isn't cutting it.

I'm the same way. I have to make a concentrated effort to pay attention to the line unless one side is just egregiously kicking the others arse.

i wasn't.... would have much rather a combination of Gallette/Wilson applying actual pressure on the QB....

hasn't for a while now.
he should be a DT... he's too heavy and slow to play DE....

every elite pass rusher
other elite pass rushers are usually not as heavy, are more athletic, and/or they play standing up in a 3-4 alignment.... he doesn't have the speed to get around the tackle to get pressure, so he basically is reduced to a bull rush (which doesn't work) or a rip or twist move (also, doesn't usually work).... the best we can hope for is a blown assignment by a back in pass protection or a breakdown along the interior line, resulting in less attention being paid to the ends, which would allow him to get upfield without much resistance..... but aside from that, he's a consistent non-factor on passing plays.....

The 5 or so times we actually got pressure today RG3 was just quite simply too damn fast. He simply stepped to the side and out ran all of our D-linemen, and even Jenkins.
Our edge contain was crap yet again today, something we need to do better at facing Newton next week. Newton is athletic, but not nearly as quick as RG3. We could get pressure and touch him, not often granted, but he's so big I don't even know if Jenkins or the blitzers can tackle him right off the bat.
Even with Spags new defense, just looking at our roster we knew we weren't going to instantly start generating QB pressure when we were the worst at it last season. It's not really a surprise, but we certainly need to introduce players who might get QB pressures. Hicks/Galette/Wilson. Unless they simply don't know the playbook at all there really is no reason for them not to be playing a bunch of snaps.

again, i'm not sure you really need a "playbook" for def. line....

our roster
Galette on certain downs, Wilson all game.... i'd even throw some 5 man fronts out there at times, with Jordan sliding inside, Lofton as the sole LB and Harper closer to the line... Greer and Robinson as the CBs, White as the Nickel, Jenkins over the top, and Harper covering the back in the slot.... have Lofton mirror Newton....

Ellis and Smith I agree, Ellis solid against the run most times, but Jordan has been pretty good. But question, how do you make an assessment when you've already acknowledge your ignorance an you don't pay much attention to the during the game?
And I'm pretty sure we played Cam Newton pretty well last year, or did you just tune in this year?

That is one thing I have yet to see Mickey and the front office pursue...D-Lineman who can put pressure on pure talent. Where are all the Jared Allens and Mario Williams that belong to the Saints? SOOOO FRUSTRATING!!!!!

Maybe today the team felt the DE had more responsibilities for containing and keeping an eye on RG3, neither of which they did well today. Certainly Galette and Wilson are much better at standard, get after the QB plays.
My only guess is the coaches feel they aren't good enough in run support and can't handle more duties other than simple rushes. I don't find either a good enough excuse, because our defense fails to keep edge contain regardless of which DE or OLB's we field.
