Got it at a gun show about 7 years ago.
They told me it was made before 1936.
The Marlin serial numbers are easier to trace after 36 or somthing like that.
I probably overpaid for it, it was beat up, someone tried to home checker the stock,
but I just had to "rescue it".

Shotgun early for shooting through leaves and 22 later because woods are more open and harder to get in shotgun range.
to the OP: I like 17hmr using CCI Full metal Jackets. It's deadly out to 100yds under the perfect circumstances.

Quite possibly the best semi .22 ever made.
I want one or ten bad.

Double barrel .410 I have had since I was 8 years old.

Everybody should have one. They are accurate as hell and just a joy to shoot. That can be said about a lot of 22 rifles though.
Personally, it's the only thing I hunt squirrels with anymore. Just something about taking those little fricks heads off or clean missing that appeals to me. Shotgun is definitely going to get more squirrels but I never squirrel hunt for the meat anyway or I'd use a shotgun.

12 gauge auto 5 with a full choke "lead only" barrel. No interchangeable chokes, so it doesn't qualify to do much else.

20ga Browning Gold Hunter. For some reason that thing is a squirrel killing machine.

I like the challenge of a .22 pistol with iron sights. Anyone can sit back and pop them with a scoped rifle. If we are taking about long guns I like my Remington Speedmaster with irons.

the most fun gun to use for squirrel is my bolt action .410.

I like using powpow's old 16ga for nostalgic reasons, but it's just too damn easy. See squirrel, blast top of tree, collect shot to hell squirrel.
Putting .22 bullets in their ears is so much more challenging. And they're much nicer to clean when they don't have guts full of 6 shot.

Ruger 10/22 with a 3-9x Tasco.
I can't count how many squirrels I killed with that gun. To me stalking them to get that perfect head shot was what it was all about. Prevents all the gut shot when you have a single clean shot.

never done much squirrel hunting, do you generally try to use the tree as the backstop in case of a miss with the .22?

I use their head as a backstop.
jk jk
No, I don't. I know where everyone is in the woods (who is supposed to be there) and don't launch bullets that way nor do I hunt close to any roads, houses, or anything like that.
ETA: And I use standard velocity ammo

I was always mindful of the direction of my shot but a .22 hitting anything will not end up going very far.
We were fortunate to have a good squirrel hunting place North of Deridder on a Logging / Cattle lease with no houses around.

We hunted mostly oaks, so I think it had something to do with the leaves getting in the way in the fall or something.
This
and all the leaves off makes it louder and harder to sneak up close, making a 22 better.
Scary though, in that alot of squirrels hit the ground around that time and a .22 is fairly dangerous bouncing around the ground. I hunted Russell Sage ALOT as a kid, awful frustrating waiting for them to get high enough up the tree to shoot!

My favorite currently is my Kimber .17 Mach 2. Prior to that it was my 10/22. I never have liked hunting them with a shotgun too much.
