I'm sure some people has some reasons, but this is why you don't hold athletes to any sort of standards.
I don't think expecting them to go to the funeral of a co-worker is holding them to any standard other than being a human being. It's really not an extraordinary thing to ask of someone.

When a person over 90 dies it's not unusual to see a small turnout because almost everyone who was close to him during his life has already passed.

Pesky must have been an a-hole if only 4 people showed up. If he was a decent person at all there would have been way more players there.
You must not be familiar with the situation.
Pesky was beloved. There were plenty of players from former teams there, and ownership, front office, regular employees, etc. There was even a public wake.
It's just the current group of self involved a-holes that couldn't be bothered.

What does this have to do with current red soxes not going to the funeral?
This seems pretty typical for this team.

Kind of stretching the definition of "co-worker".

Has he done PEDs? Yes but I believe he has a good heart

If you ever needed proof that this team is composed of a group of frickers, this is it.
..this says more about who is to blame for this shitty season, and it isn't Valentine.

Ortiz is the only guy on BOS that isn't a huge Piece of shite

They should have. But from the age differential they probably never heard of Johnny Pesky until they entered the Red Sox clubhouse. And for some of them that was when Johnny less than 5 years ago and Johnny probably just seemed like a random old guy to them.
Not excusing the behavior. Just trying to add some perspective.

No leadership! SOmeone like Jeter would have had the entire team on the bus...

I saw Johnny Pesky play - he was near the end of his career playing for the Detroit Tigers in 1953. Our family was visiting relatives in Detroit and my dad's cousin took us to a game. It was the first MLB game for both my dad and me:
June 2, 1953, Philadelphia Athletics 7 Detroit Tigers 7

did they not have lights back then, or did it start to rain?

Csb.
Fwiw, anyone who thinks professional sports players should be role models get what they deserve.

Pesky spent 60 years with the organization. He was a regular presence in the Red Sox clubhouse and even dugout during the games. He was an instructor with the team in spring training. He was a mentor to pretty much every player who came up in the organization.
Johnny died last week. He was honored with a wreath over his retired number at Fenway Park and with a moment of silence. Each member of the Red Sox wore number six in his honor against the Angels the other night.
But when the team provided charter buses to attend Johnny's funeral, only four players -Ortiz, Buchholz, Padilla and Saltalamacchia- showed up.

No g.d. respect

It was a night game, but there was a league curfew - no inning would start after 1:00 a.m. Such games ended in a tie. There were several ties in MLB in those days.
