In the DC world, where are Metropolis and Gotham City?

I know this question goes back to 1938, but each is made to look like New York, and are supposed to be Manhatten. But in the DC universe New York exists, as does Chicago (Both mentioned in Batman Year One, also Gordon is from Chicago). Now I always thought Chi-town was a stand in for Gotham and Metropolis New York. The Marvel universe uses real city names. But are there extra states in the DC universe? A larger US population? Do LA, NY and Chi have super-heroes?
Or is there existence in the DC universe limited only to Cartoons and movies? (Also note In the Dark Knight the cars had Illinois plates, in the others Gotham City)
As DC also has Coast City in place of LA on the West Coast.
Just over-thinking while watching Year One.

The wikipedia article for Metropolis actually has a really in-depth discussion regarding the locations of these two cities.
In short, it varies constantly; but they both seem to be in New England.

These are from the Atlas of the DC Universe. Metropolis and Gotham are on the 2nd map but the locations don't match with plenty of tv and movie interpretations of Metropolis and Gotham. For ex. the TV show Smallville had Metropolis 2 hours from Smallville.

So If Jersey and Deleware were more relevant and had a large metropolis then that is what we would get.

After living in Manhattan I can honestly say I feel as if Metropolis is basically north of 23rd Street and Gotham is everything below.

Yeah, geographic accuracy isn't important to movie/tv producers

I always thought of Gotham as New York, but now I think about it, I think of Metropolis as New York, too. So, in short, I have no fricking clue.

I always figured Metrolpolis was Los Angeles, and Gotham was New York...

That could just be an oversight, since it was shot in Chicago and maybe they forgot to change all of the plates?

I never really gave much thought to Metroplis, TBH, but it seems more like it would be in the Midwest. So Chicago makes sense.
Considering that Gotham City was named after a nickname for NYC, I've never thought of it being anywhere but NYC.
Someone earlier in the thread made a good point about Metropolis being a certain part of NYC and Gotham being another part.

Never really read much DC comics though. This came from tv series/movies.

Dark Knight Rises Spoilers
And this is kind of what bothers me about the DCverse.
If Superman and Batman live about an hour or two away from each other(as shown on that atlas). Why wouldn't Superman help out when Bane has an entire city held hostage in an internationally televised spectacle? Batman hadn't done anything for months to help the situation so you'd think Superman would say frick it and fly in there faster than a speeding bullet, locate the bomb with his X-ray vision, fly it into orbit, and then go beat up Bane and the gang.

Are we all just ignoring the 2006 movie?
I 've always assumed they were both caricatures of NYC. Gotham was the seedy side and Metropolis was the downtown side.
