Coach PM talked to a couple of different MLB coaches, trainers and execs about the decision beforehand. They said that it wouldn't be a problem so he went for it.

Yes it was him. I watched it. He made the comments and was probably unaware of Johnson's 229 pitches last weekend. He sounded like a tool because it's almost as if the comments were made without knowing the whole "story."

Is MLB now against warmup pitches too? I was against it from a straegy stand point, I was wrong.

If Gausman can't handle 12 pitches, sit 1 hour, then pitch a game.. he has to worry.

And with the weather, 45-6o minute dealys were likely anyway. Who's to say that if had held Gausman that he wouldn't have gone out, pitched 3-4 innings and then had to sit for a long rain-delay and been done for the day. He made the right call putting him in for the first game.

After getting the game 1 win, I would have probably saved KG for game 3.

Not really possible. You can't throw a 60 pitch bullpen, throw 12 pitches, then come back the next day and do it again. THAT would be irresponsible handling of a major league prospect.

Who gives a frick what ESPN and Baltimore think, he has not signed yet, he is JUST and LSU player. He pitched 12 pitches in the first game. ESPN hailed that Texas pitcher who in 2009 pitched 162 pitches.

Wrong. The concern for the MLB team is the same as for the player. You never want to risk his future. No recruit would ever go to such a program. Even still, the ESPN commentator was full of shite. Gausman was fine, as was his pitch count. Turned out to be a great decision. More importantly, it did not impact health or future of Gausman, which PM would never do anyway.

LSU needs to start the long toss program that Bauer and others are a part of.... Get back to pitching deep into games and not worrying about pitch counts.... Texas Rangers baseball

Because PM was putting Gausman's career at risk and Gausman is no longer just LSU's player. He is part of a major league team now.

He said after the game he consulted a bunch of people, including the Orioles organization

I would suggest that a college player is more concerned about winning a championship for the team he is currently with than a MLB team is.

MLB teams don't care about Omaha. There is where your concerns differ.

I didn't like the decision, but it had nothing to do with risk to Gausman. Gausman was in no greater risk than normal IMO.

Not a real issue.. The kid pitched 12 pitches in the first game

Really added up nothing more than probably his normal warm up routine

Now if he had thrown 50 pitches or more in the first game, would have been tougher to start the second.

The coach is responsible for the health of the player and should never jeopardize a future pro career for a college game. Never. Shouldn't matter if the kid wants to start/finish a game or not. PM's decision to start Gausman didn't hurt Gausman at all.

I could give a rats arse about the Orioles or any Major League team. Gausman is still a Tiger, we can have him throw 200 if we want while flipping off the MLB at the same time.

Screw em.

you are a clown. It's not about the MLB team, it's about the player, and his future to play for an MLB team. I seriously doubt you have a degree from LSU.

This is a non story being turned into a story. Keith Law sounds like a dumb****. If a kid can't do what Gausman did yesterday without risking injury then he doesn't need to be a pitcher. And what kind of injury was the idiot talking about? Why can't an arm that's in shape do what Gausman did? If Gausman was not effective in the second game, then there would be reason to question PM. But not when he threw well......well enough to win if we hit a little.

ESPN asked Paul about the decision following the conclusion of Game 1.

1. He said he talked to numerous MLB execs, college coaches, etc. They gave him no reason for concern.
2. He mentioned the thought process that the possibility of rain played a big part in his decision. If he saved him for Game 2, then he pitched 4 innings and then had a 2 hour rain delay, he would have been done for the weekend anyway.

So, his thought process was that it was very likely he would only get a few innings out of Gausman and wanted to use him in the most important part of the series.

Very smart move from Paul that I almost questioned until he explained it. He wanted to have his best pitcher make a difference in the series. And, starting him to finish game 1 was the only way to do that.

If he had pitched 3 or 4 innings in game 1, he would not have pitched game 2. And, they were monitoring him closely.

BTW, Gausman threw 110 pitches yesterday. That's one more than Nola threw Friday. And, Tyler Johnson threw 127 for Stony Brook.
