Tell me about Bon Ton Cafe in New Orleans

I've wanted to eat there for a few years now and it has been closed or either set apart for private dining when I have just tried to walk in. But, the place intrigues me. I'll be in the city for a week in June on business and want to give it a shot.
Anyone eat there? What did you think? What do you recommend?

Its about as quintessential (eta: I guess its quintessential New Orleans) as you can get and the family that runs it are good people. Crabmeat au gratin and bread pudding are always legit. Now that you've mentioned it I want to go while I'm in town.

It was really the first Cajun restaurant in NO. The bread pudding is great, but it packs a little alcohol punch. I think John Besh named their Crabmeat au Gratin one of the best things he ever ate. Crawfish or Shrimp Etouffe is great.

The only thing I have ever had there was ......
Crab au gratin. Which was good.

I love it. It's solid. My standard is a cup of crawfish bisque and the crabmeat au gratin which I do not allow them to dump out onto my plate because it cools too quickly. Usually share the bread pudding. It's heavy and it definitely packs a punch.

I tried it after seeing in on the Food Network. It was very good. I remember the crab au gratin but nothing else. I said I'd go back next time but always forget about it.

I'm going to have to remember this for our next Raid of Northern Aggression Campaign.

I wish more people that come to N.O. looking for the "cajun" food would end up here and not at a place like Mulattes.

John Besh was on the TV Show "Greatest Thing I Ever Ate" and they were doing cheese dishes. Besh's choice was their Crab au Gratin. He was speculating on the exotic combination of cheeses that must have gone into it.
Somebody off screen then handed him a page that had the actual recipe on it and he had to laugh - apparently the cheese component was very simple. Maybe it was American cheese, I don't know.

Yes, it was American cheese and, freshly grated, as I remember. Bon Ton doesn't use much of it, though.

If you plan on going for lunch, arrive before 11:30 to get a table. I've seen people wait for 20 to 30 minutes if they arrive after 11:45.
Never tried it for dinner.
I almost always go with the shrimp ettoufee. Never had a bad meal there.
