What's the purpose of offensive goal tending? Isn't that the purpose of the game? To put the ball in the basket?

Ihe role of the defense to STOP the other team from putting the ball in the basket? By your logic, there should be no defensive goal tending either.

Well defenses aren't allowed to take the ball off the rim, so offenses shouldn't be allowed to do it either.

I know the purpose but calling a timeout and getting to inbound the ball at half court drives me crazy.

I understand that defense isn't allowed to block the ball once it's in the hoop, but why would you penalize the offensive team for taking a goal away from themselves?

The purpose of the NBA is to score more points than the opposing team. If you do this, it results in a win.

I understand what people are saying, but if a defensive player can't go up and pull the ball while it is above the cylinder, then it would be unfair for offensive players to be able to do it for more rebounds and what not.

Stern said he will once again ask the competition committee to consider adopting the international goaltending rule, which allows players to touch the ball after a shot hits the rim and the ball remains above the rim.
This is what it should be

Yes, an offensive rebound on a ball that was going in already.
I've seen so many instances of guys just trying to tip the ball in and get called for goal tending, that's their exact assignment.
