Dude, no lie, you need to get to Austin and hit Franklin BBQ.

City Market in Luling > Lockhart. Just down the road a bit. Make sure you go to City Market and not "Luling BBQ" (a chain) across the street! First timers often get confused at this and waste a long drive.

Haven't been to Franklins but heard to get there very early cause they will run out.

If you like very salty BBQ, this is your place.

Kreuz BBQ ?

I'd pick this one, if limited to Lockhart

Black's was my favorite of those but Muellers in Taylor, Texas is the best that I have ever had brisket wise.

i've been going to Austin a lot lately and keep hearing/reading rave reviews for this place. but don't you have to queue up an hour or more before they open to ensure you get served before they run out?

Follow tejashorn's advice. City Market in Luling down the road from Lockhart is better than anything in Lockhart. That said, Smitty's is really good. I've never been a fan of Kreuz's. I've never been to Black's but I think they offer sauce unlike Smitty's and Kreuz's.

If you do go to CM in Luling, get all three offerings - ribs, links, brisket. Just make sure the links are part of any combo since that puts them over the top IMO. And their sauce is incredible.

FYI, you won't find pulled pork anywhere mentioned on this thread that I know of. (not that I dislike it.. just not a central Texas thing).

Yes. Although when I was at Franklin BBQ we were about 10 people from "end" of the line (the end of people guaranteed to get food), but there were several people who walked up after the end and got brisket without having to wait. They were out of everything else at the point, though. This was about 2pm on a Friday.
