Janitas is now the kitchen of Blind Pelican FWIW

How is the food at the BP? Haven't been there but the outdoor area looks nice.
We talking about the Janitas that was at Rendon? Never went.

Like a bunch of nomads. They should have stayed at the Avenue Pub.

I've lost count of the number of places at which they've taken up residency.

I really never knew the real reason they left Avenue. Seemed like they got a little too big for their britches over there and wanted more space. They sacrificed the clientele as well as better location albeit smaller kitchen.

I never heard either, but I know if they got even a little busy they seemed to not be able to handle things.
I heard two or three horror stories of people going there to eat at night and not getting food for a very long time or worse, being told it would be 30 minutes or longer before they could take an order. One person I knew waited an hour after being told to or three times they were backed up and then finally being told that there would be no more orders taken that night.

Some years ago, he was smoking cheese and maybe doing some bbq in a parking lot of a business, I believe. I think they were elsewhere before the Avenue, also.

This still happens now

Wasn't there some odd hours deal at the Avenue? For some reason, I was thinking they didn't handle the night service.

To me, its clearly the case of a guy who likes to cook and is good at it, but really doesn't give a frick.

I often found that they had bad attitudes, especially the woman. She always seemed surly when i would order food.

Having read their posts for a number of years on various New Orleans oriented food boards, this doesn't surprise me. She often discussed a lot of personal matters which gives insight into her.

They work only enough to stash cash so they can quit and sail on their boat for a few months. Pretty much par for the course for them and many chef types.

You might be right, I suppose. I recall him talking about a boat and going to Florida to go out on a boat.

I love the avenue. I was not aware that the cooks from the avenue opened up blind pelican. i am glad to see another good bar on magazine, esp. a sports bar which is what we needed.

I might go give them business just for that. I appreciate this outlook.

The chef at the Blind Pelican was at the Rendon Inn and the Avenue before that. I don't think they opened the Blind Pelican. Just cooking there as I understand it.

To correct some obvious misunderstandings in this thread, which is just now coming to my attention....
I owned J'anita's and, yes, we now run the kitchen at The Blind Pelican.
1) We did not leave The Avenue Pub voluntarily. We were informed by owner Polly Watts that our mutual experiment with subleasing their kitchen was no longer working for her. We agreed, since a)wait times for food on heavy nights were much too long because the kitchen is only 90sqft and b) too many customers were drinking only water or soft drinks and taking tables from those buying the bar's upscale craft beer. This beer is the bar's mainstay. We agreed with her business decision it was time for us to go. We remain good friends.
2) Our move to The Rendon Inn was a case of "first available space." We have bills to pay and we had six days to move. The Rendon was open so we took it. Had we had, say, another week or so to find a new space, we would likely have found a better location.
3) Our move out of The Rendon came after a year of being in an awful location that yielded no personal income and nearly resulted in us losing our house (an issue I am still working on). I figured it was better to stop digging the hole deeper. I worked for two months at Rouse's to at least keep the utilities paid.
4) Given my 'druthers, we'd still be at our original location on Magazine St., next to the old Jackson restaurant. But that has proven to be a terrible location for virtually any business. All of our being "nomads" has been involuntary -- except for the last decision to stop the bleeding by leaving The Rendon. Live and learn.
5) Thanks to those of you who have come to see us at The Blind Pelican. We are working in a kitchen that is still too small for the volume it sometimes faces in such a high-profile location. Physical changes are underway.
