re: Does Trent simply need to "get in" to keep his job next season?

He just needs another 5-7 years and he'll have his players and his system. He is building a program here.......
He is terrible.

I thought this was year he needed to get in the NCAAs. It's bad IMO when Southern Miss has a better coach than LSU

After 2010 we were going to make the tournament in 2011. After 2011 we were going to make the tournament in 2012.

Coach K had two bad losing seasons in his first 4 years at Duke and was 7-7 in conference his 4th season.
I wouldnt feel bad about his record if i thought we had a solid roster. Trent's obvious deficit is recruiting. We don't appear to be very athletic or talented. That's on him.

Considering the talent we have returning next year, there is no reason LSU should be that high of a seed. I'd like to see 22-25 wins before the SEC tournament and at least 10 or 11 wins in conference. If he can do that and manage a 5 or 6 seed then he gets an extension

Idk why people expected so much pre-season for this squad. We have talent, but lacked experience. Our most solid starters (Hamilton, O'Bryant and Hickey) hadn't played a game in an LSU jersey and had a lot of question marks surrounding them. Aside from laying an egg against auburn and ole miss, the team played some pretty good basketball down the stretch. If we had the experience we had at the tail end early on we (MIGHT) make the tournament. 7-9 in the sec would still have hurt, but we'd have probably would have beaten usa, coastal carolina and perhaps northwestern. With a 21-11 (7-9) record, things look a little brighter

Ever see us come out with a solid offensive game plan under Johnson? It's an absolute joke, I've seen pick up games where the offenses had more flow.

i think people expected Turner and Stringer to get better. Coupled with the newcomers that should have made us a tournament team

As already stated Turner was expected to be an All-conference type player. Outside of Hickey and JOB everyone else had more than enough experience.

I wasn't expecting us to compete for the SEC title or even make the tournament. But I expected the team to be at .500 or slightly better in the SEC. That didn't happen even in a weak conference. I just can't believe our expectations are that low in year four.
To the OP question: if he gets to the tourney next year, then he keeps his job as he should. I wouldn't extend him another 3-4 years though.

Being the last year of his contract you may have to, I doubt he'd keep signing one year extensions.
I'd like to see more than simply making the tournament next year, that should be a given with all that's coming back. I think how we look and how we get there is important

I'm sure he will be getting another extension since he made the postseason

I agree BilJ about him not wanting to sign a one-year deal.
Maybe he would sign a two year extension? But I wouldn't like it if LSU signed him to a 3-4 year deal right after making the tournament once in 4 years. I just want to see "tourney" consistency out of the program. It would be great if he made the tourney next year, but what if we signed him to a 3 year deal and he misses the touney the following year?
It would be hard to fire him then with 2 more years left on his contract, and we would owe him too much money.
I just don't want the program to get into a situation where we're hoping once every 3-4 years we make the tournament.

he has not earned his current contract, imho

Yes, why not. Basketball season just ended. Perfect time to talk about this. Oh wait I get it. You think the NIT means the season isn't over.

coming off of last year he should have made the tourney this year. No returning player got better. I dont know how many years we are going to speculate on this
fricking this.
IMO he should be gone for missing the tourney this year, but I don't like TJ at all, so I admit that my opinion could be a bit harsh.
I'd say anything less than a win in the tourney next year should merit a firing (provided he keeps his job after this season).
