My FIL got one not too long ago. It's a sweet little gun. Mostly a plinker in my eyes.

I want one of these Ruger Mini 30 same ammo as an AK

I have a mini 14 for a little while. For the money I'd just assume to have an AR.

I already have an AR and I would rather have it than a mini 14. I just want another gun and since it's a modern gun that shoots AK ammo that's cheap to shoot.

What makes a carbine a carbine anyway? Is it just a shorter length? I used to think it meant a pistol cartridge in a long gun, but I have seen too many examples since that don't fit that definition.

I think it's the barrel length being shorter, but there may be more to it than that.

It's just a compact rifle and it usually has a shorter barrel.

The M1 30 Carbine was a common round in deer hunting camps of SW in the 60's. It accounted for a LOT of shot ammo and wounded deer. Pretty anemic as a rifle hunting round. Many years ago I had an AMT semi-auto handgun chambered in 30 Carbine. Accuracy was so-so. Recoil was light, but man, it produced a heck of a fireball. Velocity w/ 110 grain bullets was around 140-1500 fps at the muzzle, IIRC. Didn't keep the pistol long before selling it. I think I still have the dies.
The 30 Carbine was developed as a personal defense weapon for certain personnel during WW2 in place of the heavier M14 Garand.

I had one years ago, rarely used it. More for novelty purposes.

Why do you want to spend $700 for something that won't shoot as accurately as a Chinese SKS?

I can get it wholesale.

You don't know what your talking about here. The Ruger out of the box will out shoot an SKS. Plus it's easier to attach scopes or tactical gear.

The best Ruger Mini I've ever seen would not break 2 inches at a hundred yards. The worst was about 10 inches. They are notoriously inaccurate. Plus, hi-cap magazines are harder to find and more expensive (doubly true for 7.62x39). Then finally, I'm not sure if this is still the case, but a good while the Ruger barrel was actually .308 in diameter whereas the 7.62x39 is actually .311. That caused some accuracy and reliability issues.
Nothing wrong with the Ruger and I like it a lot, but if I were going to get a 7.62x39, it is the last rifle I would get chambered in that cartridge.

It's been vastly improved recently.

All this is correct -- but in it's my understanding that most of these hunters used ball ammo (readily available, especially mil-surp ammo) ........ certainly not a good choice for deer hunting.
However, if the M1 Carbine is loaded with good HP ammo (such as CorBon DPX) you get a different story. It's still inferior to a .308 or .30-06, but for self defense, it's far superior to virtually any pistol in the common (9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP) calibers.
The DPX .30 Carbine ammo has muzzle velocity (out of 18" bbl) of 2025 ft/sec. It has a muzzle energy of 911 ft. pounds, which is about double that of the DPX .357 Magnum. (Surprisingly, the energy of the DPX 30 Cal. Carbine is greater at 150 yards than the muzzle energy of the DPX .357 Magnum round.)
Anyway ..... not saying the M1 carbine is the greatest self defense weapon out there. It's not even close. BUT, it's a pretty good home defense weapon and a good "truck gun" if the democrats ever start rioting like they did after the Rodney King verdict. Very light recoil, very easy to maneuver in confined spaces (like a car or truck), quick follow-up shots, 15 round mags (30 round mags are available as well) and pretty good accuracy out to 150 yards.
For grins I mounted an Aimpoint T-1 on one of my M1 carbines. If you try this, you should never take your wife, or kids, or grandkids out when you shoot it. They will shoot every round of ammo you have and beg you to get more. Virtually no recoil, not nearly as loud as an AR15, and it hits where they aim.
