I keep watching because I have great hope for it, and when it's good it's really good. I'm hoping they just got bogged down with the farm storyline, and maybe with the mid-season break they learned some lessons.
If they can get the group on the road again and force them into new situations at least every other episode then it could be a great show. If the show remains as "Herschel's Farm presents Post Apocalyptic Debate Club" then I will be miserable and even the biggest Walking Dead apologists will be up in this thread.

That scene where the guys were trying to find out information on the farm from Rick was a great scene.
Probably the best scene of the series.
Wish they had keyed in on the knowing glances between the 2 cock knockers, though.

Imo the scene would've been more powerful IF Rick would've shot the guys before he absolutely had to.
I'm ready to see Rick take some initiative and take someone out because it will beneift his group instead of waiting for him to let someone put his group in danger.

No sweat. But thanks for clearing that up.

Sorry for replying back about the vampires. That was for someone else on page 2.
I figured I must have missed something.

Kind of confirms my theory about 4th wall zombies... "maybe I am just one of the people that died after getting attacked, and didn't turn. The rest of you that still find it to be "a deeply flawed show that is still enjoyable to watch" are the ones carrying the zombie gene. The followers [like walkers] are just drudging along looking for something to sink their teeth into."
CAREFUL EVERYONE! Thundercles is a zombie!... er.. follower!!! [as in follows the show, not people/ majority]

Count me in the "characters over zombie-killin'" crowd. I have always found the post-apocalyptic dynamic of humanity to be fascinating.
For instance, I consider the Stand the best story on the subject, and it is almost entirely character-driven....

If you don't like the show, then don't watch it. For basic cable I think it is one hell of a show and a lot better than most of the crap that is out today.

Zombies don't exist?

I look at it slightly differently. CSI, Law and Order, etc do what they set out to do which is do mindlessly entertain for an hour. It's easy to jump in for an episode while cooking dinner or playing on a laptop. It's unfair to call it mediocre when it does its job. It's like saying a Katy Perry song sucks because the lyrics are simple-minded. Well you know what? Her songs are really fricking catchy.
See, and I'd rather watch a show/movie/musician strve for greatness and fail than strive for mediocrity and acheive it. Interesting fauilures, as I like to call them, are among my favorite things to watch. Because you can relate to it and try and craft it in your own mind to something better. I can't write Shakespeare, but I can fix the script of Event Horizon in my head (one of my favorite interetsing failures).
Mediocre is something that aspires to nothing. I got into this over two weekends ago, but mediocre art is a blight. Our acceptance of crappy art breeds more crappy art. It breeds passive audiences and drags down the culture in general. Mediocre pap to me is far more offensive than something that fails. And yes, I blame audiences. We demand garbage, and garbage is what we get.

I agree with you to a point. However, I have to say there is some trash that I occasionally like to watch. I realize, however, it is trash. It's sort of like occasionally enjoying a trailer park meal.

The fans keep trying to frame this as a dichotomy; either you like the show because you like "characters" and dramas or you don't like the show because you just want "zombie-killing". However, there is a third group, which I happen to fall in; some people don't like the show because the characters just aren't that good.
From probably the most respected poster on this board, and I quote from Page 1:

And more to my point, the "biggest problems" with this character driven drama are the shows "dialogue and characters." Pretty fundamental parts of a character driven drama, imo.

Like the OP said, the characters aren't likable. They continually make irrational decisions. I hope most of the cast would be eaten.
I love the show and agree with this, however...
What if this is what the writers are trying to do?

Pretty much agree with everything you have said.
I completely understand that the show is not just about zombie killing, but instead about the characters in a post apocalyptic world and how they change yada yada yada.... The fact is, this show can't even get this right.
Its nice and all that some of you appreciate what the show is trying to do, but in the end it simply just isn't doing it. A show specifically about characters should have more likable/relatable characters. Watching these characters that are supposed to be likable, but are anything but, make the most unintelligent (un-relatable)decisions is completely counterproductive to the character driven atmosphere that will keep people watching.

Rick made a good choice, and I think won Herschel over.

The show is not about zombie killing to me. It's just chili.
It's about the human drama.
The best scenes outside of the barn-stormed season 2 finale have been Rick offing the East Coast guys moving in on their turf, Shane leaving Otis as bait, Daryl's struggle to survive (only to get shot in the head), and Carl getting shot. Point is, the walker battles are nice but the human drama has had more substance.
With that said, I was hoping Carl would die (and disappointed he didn't) as I had hoped all the mothers and children would die (good riddance, Sophie). "Single adults only" would help the tempo & interest level.

For what it's worth, I full understand the idea of how it's supposed to be. George Romero set the trend with his films.
In all the good zombie fiction, the zombies alone aren't capable of bringing down humans. Eventually people turn on each other and fail themselves and that allows the zombies to win. The zombies just serve as a backdrop for humanity's flaws to be accentuated blah blah blah.
For whatever reason, it's just not done right. You never feel the danger they supposedly live in, and since they have to make these characters last over a series they can't run through the story lines like they need to. They've done a poor job fleshing them out, and they've highlighted each person's unpleasant side while not giving us a chance to like them first.
