The Hornets nickname was awesome for Charlotte. Probably one of the best nicknames in sports due to its origin.

A second nickname derives from the American Revolutionary War, when British commander General Cornwallis occupied the city but was driven out by hostile residents, prompting him to write that Charlotte was "a hornet's nest of rebellion," leading to the nickname The Hornet's Nest.

Ravens. Fancy name for a crow. And the relationship to Edgar Allen Poe makes it worse.

Where does that name come from, Tuscaloosa is pretty far from the coast and any tides in that sense.

there's thunder everywhere! If they were going for a weather related name, why not Cyclones?

He's probably the most famous resident of Baltimore ever. Great nickname IMO.

LA Lakers - this would be like the Colorado Rockies becoming the New Orleans Rockies
Utah Jazz - this is like the New Orleans Jazz becoming, well, the Utah Jazz
Raptors - as already dicussed
Memphis Grizzlies

NBA has a lot of bad team names come to think of it

ReaL Salt Lake? Chivas USA

I've always hated that...when MLS started, they were hell bent on just copying everything they saw overseas down to a tee...and it just comes off as some bushleague. What the hell is royal about Salt Lake City???? And maybe two guys in that state speak Spanish!

Soccer might not have been that popular but America has played it longer than 15 years. Why couldn't they just have an American league - that does things the way we do things in other sports...but top to bottom..."we have to call it a pitch now."

Maple Leafs is a great one in my opinion. It's a much better nickname than the Canadians, Senators, Jets, Flames, Oilers, and Canucks.

Back in the first few seasons of MLS, it was great when these two teams would get together:
