the funny thing is, McCalleb and Granger both lead the metro area in scoring when they were in HS. In other words, Jefferson/Orleans/Northshore/River parishes.

Their names were at the top of the rankings every week in the paper. YOu'd think someone would have gotten word.

and I'm pretty sure McCallebb either won the state title or was the runner up his Sr year at OP Walker

I know a lot of coaches and Reffs in the NOLA area and we have talked about this issue. The consensus amongst them is kids in the NOLA area just don't grow up as LSU basketball fans. There is very little brand identity.

Not to mention LSU coaches have had some very public problems with recruiting certain kids in NOLA. At one time during his tenure and at the end of the Dale Brown era the "curse of Griff" could have carried some weight but now I think it is just kids in the city can see teams from any conference and they just don't have the motivation to play for LSU

Coach Griff at Aug had a rift with Dale Brown and then LSU in general and was alleged to have spoken negatively about LSU basketball to those that listened

Basketball recruiting is remarkably national. It's like this everywhere.

That's mostly for the better players though, as for role players I'm unsure why LSU doesn't seem like a better option.

I really don't know why TJ didn't just hire Gathers' AAU coach for an administratvie position or something.

Not sure of the exact text, but I believe a NCAA rule was just recently passed prohibiting that from happening.

Same amount of scholarships, same amount of TV exposure (at least at the Top 6 conferences) anywhere in the country. Hell, even last night, as I went to sleep, I was flipping around through THREE West Coast Conference games. In 1988, St. Mary's, Portland, San Francisco would NEVER have been on TV.

In 1988, you absolutely had to try to get to a team that was in the top half of the BIG conferences, so you could be on CBS on Saturday or ESPN's Big Monday.

Now..... kids need to go where they can play immediately. The game WILL be televised. They need to play as early as possible, grow as a player, put together a highlight package. Chris Johnson (from LSU) is a perfect example. Averaged 7 points, 5 boards in college, put but together enough of a highlight reel to make it to an NBA bench. He came to LSU from the DC area.

It's not 1988 anymore. You don't have to be at Indiana, Syracuse or Kentucky (or playing against them at Purdue and LSU) to get noticed. You have just as good of a chance of getting drafted from Fresno State, San Diego State or Marquette.

Sadly, most LSU fans are stuck in 1988, and can't seem to move past it.

The rule is that you can hire their coaches, and even their family members, but it has to be for an actual coaching position. You can't hire them as personal assistants, admins, film coordinators, or errand boys.

It seems to me LSU needs to hire Timmy Byrd. That guy appears to be the best recruiter in New Orleans. I don't know anything about his coaching abilities, or how he is perceived in New Orleans. He could be a clown.

Timmy Byrd owns a supply business and is basically a part time employee at Riverside. So it is highly unlikely LSU or any other school could hire him as an Asst Coach

But that being said, LSU should have hired Byrd a long time ago

Consider this: LSU's never signed a prospect from St. Augustine.

Lest we forget Shan Foster and Brady's complete botching of his recruitment

For the 250th godddamn time this is pure bunk.

LSU had three scholarshiops in 2004 and tehy signed Glen Big Baby Davis, Tyrus Thomas, and Garret Temple. Two years later all three started on a Final Four team. If Shan Foster had been signed it is very doubtful they make the Final Four as the three signees played pivotal roles on the team. Davis started on two SEC West champions and Temple started on two SEC title teams.

Did Shan Foster lead Vanderbilt to even an Eastern Division title? He was a great player at Vandy but you clearly only want to bash Brady and you have faile miserably.

If you want to win at LSU it is very simple. You go ask a Calipari or a Petino or.........how much and what do you want. The same thing we did with Saban.

Saban was far from being Cal or Petino level when LSU hired him.

Its easy to cherry pick certain players who didn't sign with LSU and later flourished. The same can be done around the country for every program. I doubt college recruiting is premised on tracking the leading scorers in an area as so many variables come into play.

How come neither of these players had any major programs recruiting them?

Did you consider the scholarship limitations LSU was under when Granger was a senior? They signed Antonio Hudson a more heralded player that season. Granger signed with Bradley. Its not like a national power stolehim away.

I believe McCaleb had academic issues out of high school and his status was not clear until the end of the school year. In 2003 LSU signed Brandon Bass, Ross Neltner, Tac Minor, Regis Koundjia, & Darnell Lazare. Minor was a top 25 recruit at the same position as McCaleb. Hindsight may say McCleb would have been teh better choice but no coach would have signed him over Minor given the choice at the time.

Just keep things in perspective. LSU did have three NCAA appearances, won two SEC West titles, an SEC title and made aFinal Four appearance with these other signess. It would be great to sign every future star but there are scholarship limits, individual development and myriad factors that determine the ultimate value of a recruit.

These are the NBA players out of N.O. (& area) high schools since 1975:

Rick Robey - Kentucky
James Ray - Jacksonville Univ.
Avery Johnson - Southern
Donald Royal - Notre Dame
Jaren Jackson - Georgetown
Robert Pack - USC
Eldridge Recasner - Washington
Randy Livingston - LSU
Kerry Kittles - Villanova
Gerard King - Nicholls State
Dedric Willoughby - Iowa State
Chris Duhon - Duke
Danny Granger - New Mexico
DJ Augustin* - Texas
Greg Monroe - Georgetown

15 in 37 years or about 1 every 2.5 years. Only about 1 every 5 years was very highly recruited out of high school. But LSU has missed on all but Livingston.

NO's Hollis Price led Oklahoma to a Final Four, and was a helluva Big-12 performer.

It would be interesting to compile a list that would include guys like Price, Bright, Spencer, Dwayne Bryant, etc. to see how many productive N.O. area college players were or were not signed by LSU.

It's also easy to make excuses why certain players were not signed. The fact is, LSU has done horrible in the city of New Orleans, for 30+ years over three different coaches. For LSU to be a consistent top echelon SEC team, this has to change.

Illinois needs to recruit Chicago to win. Maryland needs to recruit Baltimore to win. Georgia needs to recruit Atlanta to win. It's pretty simple.
