Both are fine for deer hunting around here, the 7 will allow you an elk hunt if you get the chance

7mm mag is too much gun for whitetail IMHO.

7mag
pros
-flat shooting
-bringing some arse
-large ammo selection
-"cool" to have a magnum
cons
-kicks like hell
-most guns seem finicky about what ammo they like
30-06
pros
-largest ammo selection on earth
-every rifle out there is chambered for it
-almost overkill for whitetails
cons
-long action if that bothers you
-not "cool" to own
ETA: No way I would have a 7mag over a 30-06, but that is just my personal preference.

Never seen one deer deader than another
I hunt with a 7 and my last trophy would of never been found with a lesser round, because I made a horrible shot, was looking at horns too long

I will defend the 30-06 over the 7mag till death in this thread
I hate a 7mag with all of my being for somebody who only hunts in louisiana.
Edit for piss poor grammar

7mm Mag will cost you twice as much per box of ammo too.

Not a thing in the world wrong with either

IMO either step up and get a 300. or go with the 30-06. You can check for yourself but ive read somewhere, I think Outdoor Life that more big game animals have been taking with a 30-06 than all the other rifles combined. That being said im partial to a 300. because of the flat trajectory and have killed a truck load of deer with it. People will say its over kill, but to each his own. I love it and will never get rid of it. I had a muzzle brake put on mine and in my opinion kicks less than my 270. wsm now!

The 30-06 is a fine an elk cartridge as the 7mm ever thought about being.
7mm, you'll get higher vilocities with a higher BC bullet. It will be flatter shooting and resist winds better. For this you will pay the price of higher recoil and usually a greater weight due to longer barrel length. You will have a more limited choice of ammo (marginally) and you will pay a heftier price for that ammo. I agree with the earlier poster in that I have experienced 7mm rifles in the past that were finicky.
30-06, you have a rifle that will do anything you ask of it out to 500yds. It is the American workhorse. It has killed everything on the North American continent and it has killed them as dead as anything with the word Magnum behind it. You lose some velocity, and you pay for it in trajectory. Will you ever notice it? The fact that you're here asking this question tells me no. The only people that notice this is us gun nuts that obsess of numbers that will never matter in the real world.
My answer is....I don't know, it makes my head hurt.

Yep. I hate any rifle caliber with "magnum" on the end of it for hunting in louisiana. Mainly because I have to sight guns in for people that shoot the hellacious things for no reason sometimes.

Infidel needs to get up here. ETA:too late, lol
BTW, 7mm mag is not available on every shelf. 30-06 has been and will be on every ammo shelf in every small town gas station and Walmart in this country.
