No, once the o-line moved, the play was dead. The facemask, even if it happened, never happened

This is true. The sad part is that the two guys for usc that moved were lined up over Benji. He might have sacked Mcdonald clean since he beat their arse on the play.

LINK

Here is a link to the play in question for those of you who have not seen it.

It was a clear facemask 15 yards not a brush. Paul's entire torso was pulled via the mask.

Not the best video from those days but I do not see this. Very questionable call.

Looked like Cholly Mac originated the Les Miles clap in that video.

That's funny. Miles always reminds me of coach Mac.

If the offical calls the false start on the two USC linemen, then LSU beats USC 12-10 (it would have been 4th down with less than 3 minutes left); and history may have changed.
IMO LSU would have had the impetus amd momentum to win at least 9 that year. Maybe we win a couple out of FSU, Bama, Georgia, and Tulane (all close losses), and we possibly could have gone to a NYD Bowl or a different bowl.
This would have probably changed the recruiting schedule for new coach Bo Rein. Maybe he is not even in Shreveport on that fateful Jan. 10, 1980 night; maybe his schedule would have been pushed back a day or two.
Or maybe he finishes up his recruting earlier on Jan. 10 and the brand new Cessna takes off BEFORE the thunderstorm causes pilot Louis Benscotter to divert the path.
If Rein lived, he would be nearing retirment age this year (he was 34). Not to say he would have stayed at LSU all these years, but you never know.
What would have become of Stovall, Arnsparger, Brodhead, Archer, Hallman, Dinardo, Saban, Miles......Drew Brees?

Mind boggling isn't it? All because an official refused to penalize mighty USC for having 2 linemen clearly move before the snap....

Could play What if all day!; What if the Germans don't buy the fake D-Day Normandy landing spot and weather doesn't clear enough just in time? (do we all speak German now?); What if Lee Harvey Oswald misses the shot on JFK (assuming he did it)? Do we not have Vietnam War at all? What If Mark Clayton gets the call for TD in 2004 BCS Sugar Bowl that was almost not on the turf? Do we go on to lose the game and NC to OU?!
Just a few! LOL!

The crowd was so loud, John Ferguson had to yell into his microphone. No way they could filter out the noise that night.

My dad, who's been going to games since '58 or so, says that is the only game he never saw ANY tickets for sale outside the stadium before the game. It was only people looking for tickets.

Then your dad should recall that the first sell out was the Kentucky game of 1958. My buddy and I would always drive down from N.O. and buy a ticket at the gate, usually at a great discount. When we arrived for the Kentucky game, though, there was nothing for sale. We listened to the game on our car radio which, strangely enough, was parked about 20 feet from the gate. At the start of the 4th quarter the guy guarding the gate let everybody in and we scattered about looking for SRO space.

Someone mentioned (I guess in the last 6 months?) that they had the audio of the entire game, with Ferguson broadcasting.

Several people told the poster they'd love to hear it...and then he disappeared.

As many good tailbacks as USC had in those days, this guy was my favorite one out of all of them. My 2nd fav team back in the day as USC. My dad's still pissed about me liking them because because of the outcome/circumstances of the 79 LSU/So Cal game.

If you are a Davis fan watch clips from the 1974 ND game.

Video

AT that time Hiesman ballots were due before the SC-ND game (he finished second). he surely would have won.
quote:

On November 30, 1974, he started an amazing rally which brought the USC Trojans back from a 24-0 second quarter deficit against #4 ranked Notre Dame to a 55-24 win. Just before halftime he scored on a 7 yard lateral pass from quarterback Pat Haden. Davis found paydirt a second time on a 102-yard kickoff return to open the second half. With only 3:25 elapsed in the third quarter Davis scored a third touchdown on a 6 yard run. Then with still 8:37 left in the same quarter, Davis added his fourth and final touchdown of the game on a 4 yard dash, dropped to his knees, went into his "endzone dance", then added a two-point conversion and the Trojans had the lead 27-24. Incredibly, Davis had scored 26 of the Trojans' first 27 points.

Absolutely positively the loudest game I have I been to in my 50 years of attending. Not sure why, but something was there that nite. I was totally exhausted, couldn't talk for days. Great memories reading this thread.

I mean I know we lost, but why was it such a great game? I obviously wasn't born then, so please oldtimers, let me glean from your wisdom.

one of the only games I didn't go to for many years. My old man GAVE away the tickets to a friend because he was wanting to go in the freakin woods and thought they were going to bet whipped. Boy was he wrong.

The FM penalty is very questionable in real time. It's not that obvious. Not blinders, just what's on the actual vid.
